  • Contranyms have got to be super annoying when learning another language:

    https://www.dailywritingtips.com/75-contronyms-words-with-contradictory-meanings/

Not unique to English by any means, not sure if it has any more than usual for a language, but still annoying I'm sure.

I've never even thought about "all but" and "everything but" having basically opposite meanings. And then there's "anything but" as well.

  • You're right, there are indirect ways they get support. They are not directly funded like in many countries though. That's not to say they don't have considerable resources.

Financial disclosures are even available online.

I was just pointing out other Olympic teams didn't have the very centralized system of state run organization and funding like Russia had that would allow something like what Russia did to even be possible.

  • Posting this source which goes through some of the methodology that came out to China potentially having enough vacant real estate to house possibly as high as 3 billion people. A lot of caveats with that estimate, there's no official data available, and it's on the high end of a range of estimates, but seems clear they have way too much real estate either built or paid for in advance but not built (and realistically much of that money gone as these companies go under).

  • The lgbt person's story is just an example. The article goes on state religious trauma may affect as many as a third of US adults. It's not saying this hypothetical new dsm diagnosis would be specific to only lgbt related religious trauma.

  • This is not just some random athletes doing it on their own here and there. There was (still is? Who knows) a Russian government run program to allow for doping and help their athletes evade monitoring from anti doping authorities. Likely at least 580 postive tests across 30 different sports covered up. Team USA doesn't even get government funding, let alone a government run doping conspiracy.

  • "Lose weight and rejuvenate dry leg skin with this one weird trick!"

  • It's a fairly typical "rule" in personal finance not to spend more than 30% of your income on housing or rent, which is probably why that's what the study is using. You're right it is a little conservative, and especially in cities most people have been going over that for quite a while. Some landlords will not even consider your application though if your income isn't 3x the rent. It's still a good idea to spend 30% or less on housing or rent, if you have the option. Not everyone does.

  • They can't just put their foot down and say no more fossil fuels forever, all banned. He's not a dictator. Biden admin has to work within the bounds of current law. If they just deny every approval application they'll get sued and the courts will force an approval.

"The current economic and environmental analyses the Energy Department uses to evaluate LNG projects don’t adequately account for potential cost hikes for American consumers and manufacturers or the impact of greenhouse gas emissions, the White House said."

One of the parts of this process is considering costs. The Biden admin has been changing old formulas made under the department of energy under Trump that calculate costs of greenhouse gas emissions but vastly under count the damages. The delay allows them to re calculate these costs with better formulas, and maybe even block them altogether. If they just say no and block it without following the normal regulatory process though, courts will overturn them in a second. Just like a ton of those Turmp regulations that made a bunch of his base happy but were shortly overturned for violating the regulations proceess.

Not disagreeing with continuing to keep up the pressure on the admin and lawmakers, but with the powers the executive does have this is how you would start if blocking it for good was your goal. Calculate the impact costs as so expensive (and rightfully so) so that any rejections will look very justified and can stand up in court.

  • Buried in the article is that Republicans are attempting to pass a law to raise the threshold needed for a popular referendum to pass. They're trying to block people from voting to legalize abortion in the state this next election, because they know they'll lose.

  • It means they had rents that were more than 30% of their income, by this study's definition.

  • Yes that's all true, I agree with you. And I hate how big companies pass on the cost of their waste to the public in this and so many other instances.

The linking it to a supposed coronocupia logo was the clickbait nonsense to drum up views though.

  • Sorry to post a serious comment on a shit post, but just in case this is bugging anyone:

Turn the clock away from your bed. The anxiety from potentially not getting enough sleep can prevent you from falling asleep in a vicious cycle.

Sometimes people can even be sleeping for quite a while without realizing they had been sleeping, then just look at the clock and be like, oh no I lied here for another hour with no sleep, and feel even worse, and now ironically be unable to fall back asleep. If it's bad enough sometimes people can even get what's called paradoxical insomnia. Where the person will insist they hadn't been sleeping or barely slept, even if you had them in a sleep lab with video and eeg and you show them they've been sleeping for hours (they aren't trying to lie or anything, it's an issue with perception of sleep amount and the perceived low amount then causing symptoms and distress).

Anyways, set that alarm, turn the clock away. Stop micro-calculating how much time until morning.

Description of paradoxical insomnia from a patient point of view if anyone's interested:

  • Not some home brew theory. And it is very convoluted, but it's bascially more "one China" policy word games.

The Taiwanese president unofficially stated in 1991 they do not claim mainland China, but this was never affirmed by courts and there's no force of law behind it. They cannot officially do this currently without greatly antagonizing China. China's view is that Taiwan limiting its borders to include only Taiwan and not all of China, would signal the end of the "one China" policy and be a precursor to Taiwanese independence. If Tawain were to declare different national borders that include only the island itself, then China would view it as a violation of their anti secession law passed in 2005, which threatens military force in retaliation. In China's view, they are another government still within China and still in civil war, without the authority to re-define national borders.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Secession_Law

Continuing to claim mainland China as part of the same country is continuing the current status quo, any deviations from that would be viewed as an attempted separation of "indivisable" China. So the claim to the mainland at this point in history is primarily to not antagonize China and continue the status quo situation.

  • One, fruit of the loom bought that company after this event happened (were not owners during the event), they became liable by buying them. Two, that has nothing to do with a coronocupia being in the logo, there is no good evidence of a cornucopia ever being in the logo, that was just a tik toker driving up views by trying to link it to the more popular mandela effect thing. Removing a small section of a logo to cover up a chemical spill? That makes absolutely zero sense (not to mention it's not exactly covered up, it's on the epa website). But good on them for spreading awareness of chemical contamination by companies. Bad on them for doing it by making up nonsense about the logo to drum up views.

    https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/fruit-of-the-loom-cornucopia/

  • It's never had the cornucopia in the logo.

    https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/fruit-of-the-loom-cornucopia/

It's pretty common for people's brains to want one to be there for some reason though. My guess is because we've seen so many similar pictures of fruit or vegetables spilling out of a cornucopia that we misremember and merge similar pictures.
