Review finds a monk sexually abused children ‘in plain sight’ over decades on a UK island

  • The investor ownership list likely doesn't cover corporate farms. I forgot to add one more thing to that list - capital intensity has increased in farming. Farming is more efficient with large automated machinery. And with larger corporate farms. The larger the farm the more efficient it can be because of scale - whether purchasing machinery, maintaining them, sourcing inputs (labor, seeds, feeds, ferts etc) and selling outputs and the organization around the business. Consolidation is going to be driven by investors.

  • Rising farm values is being driven by a couple of things. Yes the inflation and demand-driven rising food prices. It's also being driven by the same forces that's driving real estate values around the country and the world - low interest rates, and great wealth inequity. The billionaires are forming clubs (funds) to buy up farms and forests around the world. This has been going on since the late 2000s but has accelerated over the last decade. Bill Gates is the largest owner of farm lands in the US now as an example - and that's just what's directly in his name, and doesn't cover his indirect ownership through investment funds that specialize in owning farms. In a word - folks, this is but a small bit of news on the bigger picture - we are heading back to the medieval age where the lords owned all the lands and houses and the rest of us are serfs living at their mercy. Welcome to the New Middle Ages.

  • This is quite rich for China to ask while constantly complaining about being victimized by Japan during WWII while not a peep has come out of them about the shaming they suffered during Opium wars when western nations effectively carved up China to spheres of influence. Not to mention the seizing of neighbor's islands and territories through force while proclaiming it as theirs because an insane Chinese monarch once sent out a bunch of rickety boats into the seas centuries ago. I suggest Chinese tidy up their over-all diplomatic messaging and strategy first.

  • In some ways it will because now your disposable income will be reduced thereby crimping your ability to spend on consumer goods. You have to remember that the last time housing pricing went through the roof decades ago, BOC jacked up interest rates in order to bring prices back to earth and yes home owners who bought at the wrong time did suffer. These historically low interest rates are as much to blame for the housing price increases as the lack of new builds supply due to restrictive regulations and zoning policies. If we are to solve the affordability problem, housing prices will have to decline. Housing as the main wealth creation tool for the upper middle class of Canada and as a big driver of the economic growth has undesirable consequences that we are facing now.

  • No crap! Duhhh. Finally competition bureau is doing some of their home work. And new entrant encouragement isn't the only action that's available. And that's not the only sector that's been consolidated either. Someone needs to kick the behind of these bureaucrats.
