I've bought one and sent it back again. I felt like I'm not utilizing most of the space since I had to move my head too much to see windows on either side.

I'm now using two 4k Screens. In in the middle and one to the side, but rotates by 90 degrees. Can recommend that. Though for gaming... I can imagine it there.

Yes. But instead of spending ever free minute on it I'll only check it once or maybe twice a day.

Most communities I cared about feel less lively. Except for maybe two or three.

That's not entirely how this works though. I mean you aren't wrong, but it's not fully automatic (anymore). At least as far as I know.

They can't necessarily association your phone with you if you don't choose to provide them with access to your tracking ID. That was the default in the past, but isn't anymore. Facebook was really really pissed about Apple making this a user choice.

Additional they can only track you within your browser if you signed in with a Meta/Facebook account on one of their services. But yes. If you do that every site that contains something from Facebook (Login with Facebook, a post, some other thingy from Facebook) will report back to Facebook that you've visited them.

This all being said: Facebook is the worst if it comes to this stuff.

Don't closed ones like 1Password also have audits? But I guess it's a personal philosophy.

Why are these the only real choices? What makes the others not real?

I personally don't derive any value from high quality conversations about topics I don't care about. That's why I need these millions of users, so that there are people I can talk with. About topics I care about. I'm willing to go on a limb here an say that your interests and mine don't fully align.

Not sure if you are joking or not. But at times that's actually what I think about and sometimes even do. If there is a car with too bright lights coming down the road I'll turn on the high beams because it reduces my ability to see the road otherwise.

I mean you can install Google messaging apps on iOS (not that I would want to use them...). But try that the other way around. Apples option to not using SMS would simply be to provide iMessage for Android. Problem solved. They would very likely become the main messaging platform by doing so. Currently the majority of the market is likely split between WhatsApp, Telegram and WeChat.

But obviously they fear that this would hurt iPhone sales. At the same time this also leads to iMessage being irrelevant in the majority of markets where iPhone isn't as dominating as in the US.

I think if this is what Lemmy is intended for it’s sad and will always a niche thing. I refuse to believe that this is what Lemmy is aiming for.

It’s all about content and diversity. Without a huge number of users you won’t get all these niche communities that one loves Reddit for.

Where is the active plant doctor community? Where are the folks from different professions weighting in with their opinion?

The Fediverse could exist with 5 users. But it would be boring. It just now crossed a threshold where one could hope that if becomes something.

Next problem is surge pricing and general ticket prices. I recall one city I was living in a few years back having advertisements for taking the train. And I was like “Yeah sure. It’s just double the price and triple the time”.

To me taking the train (at least for long distances) is a luxury thing.

Yeah. That’s my experience as well. I will also ask people to stop sending me SMS. The last time that happened was probably over 10 years ago though. Everyone I ever met (except for US folks) uses messengers nowadays. I mean even a lot of US folks use iMessage instead of SMS. Even though that’s weird as well. Since I would expect folks to use some universal app that isn’t restricted to a specific phone brand.

I think that might be a narrow view though. Most of the world likely doesn’t use SMS anymore (for probably a decade). So removing SMS didn’t make much of a difference there, but increased security. Especially when people are used to use multiple apps anyways.

So the better analogy would be “imagine if gopher and http needed separate browsers”. Except they do.
