  • Was walking around my childhood neighborhood around dusk with my friend and his dad. I was around 12 years old at the time. This was in the suburbs but it was an old neighborhood and was very wooded.

We walked around the back side of the neighborhood where this abandoned old mansion was. The property had been overgrown since before I was born and it was so wooded that you couldn’t see the house from the road. Apparently the old man who owned the mansion built this large man-made pond in the front of the property for his wife. It was near the road side of the property.

As we were almost past the mansion, I suddenly got this ominous feeling and whipped my head around to scan the trees. At the far side of the pond I saw something that was disappearing behind a tree. It “walked” upright like a person, but it had the back legs of an alligator and a long, round tail. I wouldn’t come to find out until years later when I saw one in person, but the tail looked and moved just like a kangaroo tail.

I was at first fascinated by what I was seeing, then felt overcome with fear. I told my friend and my dad that I thought I saw something and that we had better get home before dark.

No idea what it was, but over the following years when I would walk by that property, I’d always stop and try to see if I could spot it again. Though I never could look for long before getting creeped out.

  • Can anyone explain to me if this is good or bad?

If you’re looking for a house, I think this is bad because the rate is crazy high and your monthly payment is gonna be nuts until rates drop and you can refinance.

For everyone else, it means The Federal Reserve has raised interested rates enough to at least stave off some of the consumption in the economy.

Should the Fed lower rates to start promoting growth again?

  • IT TAKES A LOT OF EMOTIONAL MATURITY TO ADMIT THAT YOUR FAMILY OF ORIGIN ISN’T PERFECT. I ADMIRE THAT LEVEL OF INTROSPECTION.

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU’RE CRANKING THE HAWG OF LIFE BROTHER; MAY IT CRACK YOU BACK IN RETURN!

  • I’m glad you shared your experience, honestly.

I’m happy with what I’ve seen here, but I’ll also say that I didn’t hang out in too many smaller subreddits. Even when I did, I saw some vitrol come out on the regular. Maybe the vibe on smaller subreddits is better than Lemmy?

Either way, I’m glad you’re here.

  • I had that kind of “astroturf-y” feel from the Reddit comment as well, but their opinion about mod tools is not entirely wrong.

The fear-mongering about CSAM being all over the place hasn’t been my experience, though. I’ve never come across CSAM here on Lemmy (sorry to those who have), but I don’t tend to keep NSFW posts on because I cruise Lemmy at work.

  • The “Not enough mod tools” complaint is valid and I hope that improves as the platform moves forward.

I DO NOT get the disdain for the Lemmy userbase. I’ve been here for the past 4-5 months and can say I’ve had so many more meaningful and fulfilling conversations here on Lemmy than I ever did on Reddit in the 10 years I was there.

I think it’s the same situation as between a small town and a big city. Reddit is huge and with a large number of people; you’re going to statistically get a larger number of assholes. Not to mention there are tens of thousands of people commenting on anything that hits r/all, so there’s no chance someone else is going to read your 1 comment that is drowning in a sea of other comments.

Lemmy feels more like a small town. Things move a little slower here, but there’s less competition to have your voice heard, and I end up seeing some of the same users time and time again across the Fediverse. I think that smaller feel means more people have a chance to see your content without it getting drowned out by the masses, which means more opportunity to make connections.

Some people suck, but Lemmy has been fucking awesome for me so far and I love this place because of that.

  • If you haven’t played SOTN, I highly recommend you take a pitstop from platformers and try it now. I just played and beat it for the first time last week and it’s great.

    Reasons for my suggestion:

    1. It’s spooky season and the SotN theme fits well.
    2. The game is beatable in one day.
    3. The music is fantastic.
  • Gotten better and better over time.

I’ve learned to always have a backup account on another instance and that’s decreased my downtime to almost zero.

I prefer the content here to Reddit, as Reddit seems to just be clickbait these days.

My favorite thing here is the community. Much less likely to encounter an asshole and even when people disagree, they seem to argue in good faith. Love the Lemmy/knib community feel.
