  • Brother, you might need to just give yourself time.

You mentioned you just got out of 12 years in food service and you’re only 28 years old! Depending on how recent your escape was, you may just need some time to not do food service and you’ll feel yourself start to come out of your shell. My man, you’ve probably been out through the wringer in your past industry. Enjoy your new career and the nice things that are different from the place you left behind.

Beyond that, I’ve always believed that to have fun, people need to feel safe. You have to ask yourself: “am I grumpy because I don’t feel safe/accepted/comfortable in this situation?” By analyzing what’s bothering you, you may be able to eventually push yourself out of your comfort zone and have a playful attitude with others. I think the father in your example story does but feel safe in his own life.

Friendliness covers a multitude of sins, but it takes practice to present yourself in a friendly way.

  • I guess the point I was trying to make is that I always felt like it was my responsibility to block stuff I found offensive. If mods were also watching out for content that wasn’t good, ask the better; less for me to block.

Honestly, one of the reasons I dislike Reddit is because every other video in r/all is some war footage of people dying. I don’t want that content. But I understand not everyone feels that way and I can block it and move on.

  • I agree and support keeping them federated.

Maybe it’s just me personally, but I’ve been on multiple instances now (usually having to hop because smaller instances went under) and I’ve always considered it my own responsibility to curate my feed.

For example: Wherever random loli stuff (which I am personally absolutely not at all interested in) would come up in the global feed, I would block the community and move on.

Lemmy has always had a more gritty feel to me than larger social media platforms, and I like that. The price of entry for me has always been that there’s the chance I encounter stuff I don’t like (or that is downright disturbing).

  • Sounds good! Again, no pressure at all :)

Ya know, I wonder what someone else is going to think if they eventually stumble across this thread. “Why are these two people flipping out about a 20 year old game when they should be talking about Zoom’s new privacy policy?!” xD

  • Wow, it’s weird but i think my comment got removed by a mod or something. I don’t see it here anymore either.

And no worries about connecting. If it works out, it’s cool, if not it’s cool too. I’d just hate for this Lemmy account to die and then I potentially lose touch with someone cool like yourself 👍

I’ll keep an eye out for your friend request on Discord.

  • Yes! I was going to say the Theme of Payon is one of my favs because if the Shamisen!

That story about the GM is so cool. I don’t think I ever interacted with one outside of when they’d occasionally summon MVPs in the south Prontera entrance and kill all the folks just hanging out down there. Gaming was so fun Back in the day.

Rai, I can’t believe that this game is still bringing people together even ~20 years later!
