I used to be a researcher in hypoxia and wanted to clarify this for folks.
The way your brain and body detect low oxygen is indirectly via the drop in pH, or increase in acidity, that high carbon dioxide causes. They call this hypercapnia. Without hypercapnia, there’s none of the pain or distress of asphyxiation because your body can’t actually detect oxygen or its displacement directly.
At 78%, nitrogen is the overwhelming majority of air you breathe.
After 1-2 breaths of 100% nitrogen, humans lose consciousness.
This is why working with inert gases is so dangerous - you’ll asphyxiate without even knowing you entered a room without enough oxygen to sustain life. Had to do a whole training to get our liquid nitrogen tank into a smaller animal isolation room for our study for this exact reason.
If I had to choose a way to die, I’d choose nitrogen displacement without question.
I’ve been really surprised by urban high schoolers and college kids - their sense of style and affect is much more unisex and there’s a distinct apathy toward gender norms. Plenty of ostensibly “straight” young couples wearing clothes and behaving in ways what would have coded millennial youth as queer.
Most of the openly nonbinary people (they/thems) I’ve met are much younger than me.
Groovy. Gender roles are dead. Guess this might help explain why trans folk are seen as the big bad by boomer conservatives and rural folks.
How is existing as a transgender person pornographic or obscene? Is it not well-known that trans people are generally more private about their bodies and sex lives than the general population?
There isn’t even a cogent reason provided for what problem is being caused by trans folks. Presumably it’s the threat to the patriarchy gender variance poses, but idk why they don’t say that part out loud.
As much as I resent it being the way of things, money is power under capitalism. Where possible, I try not to cede mine to people looking to do nefarious things or disseminate shitty ideals. While I don’t have much personally and Kant was a pretentious douche canoe, I’m still idealistically partial to the universal maxim.
Yeah, no ethical consumption under capitalism or whatever but we can try not to prop up people who are brazenly making the world shittier. Thinking our actions don’t matter is how we get complacency.
There’s no disagreement here. Just venting frustrations about the cis-hets. I don’t think I need to discard idealistic dreams and exclusively operate in praxis mode in all places and contexts. It’s too heckin’ stressful.
Yeah, I’m well aware that sex =/= gender as a person as trans experience. But that’s how the world at large treats it and it would be awesome if there were just no preconceptions or expectations on the basis of assigned sex.
Can just we skip to the part where gender is impertinent and we just lead our lives in ways that fulfill ourselves and others? Support and adore your partners, communicate and productively work through unmet expectations, etc. It really shouldn’t matter much what’s between one’s legs.
At some level, men just need to stop giving a shit about what maladjusted men think and focus on what actually matters - living a good life for one’s self and those around them. If we’re actually interested in flourishing beyond our critter origins, anyway.

Dude, it must be your social circles. I’m related to, work with spouses of, or am friends with no less than 5 stay-at-home guys. Also, most men with families at my company take on significant child care responsibilities due to being able to work from home. It comes down to making things work so food’s on the table and good humans are raised (or a stable household is kept). Gender is impertinent.

Oh I’m sure you would have warm, fuzzy feelings if your government decimated your city and you had no agency to leave. Lack of clean water, food, and medical aid amidst ongoing death and destruction would only endear them to you further, but of course!
The only silver lining I can find is a bit selfish, but it’s really nice that the trans population of MN is growing explosively. Can’t even leave the house in the metro without seeing other GNC folks.
Eh. It wanted to go places. I wish it had been more fleshed out than the concept porn that was delivered, to be honest. The concepts were creative and interesting, but the narrative was rather weak, IMHO. It could have been so much better but it seemed to be stymied by heavy-handed, meddling producers.
