  • I personally doubt that a majority will vote for a right-wing candidate, solely on the grounds that right-wingers tend to cut subsidies for the poor.

The current situation in Argentina is that, in a nutshell, the country is being governed by a vice president who (together with her then-president husband) is largely responsible for the worst bankruptcy in the country's history and was a person of interest in close to a thousand cases of corruption before she gained political immunity again. A majority still voted for her, only because she and the presidential candidate promised to reinstate (and in some cases expand) many subsidies that then-president Macri abandoned in order to balance the budget, win the trust of foreign investors back and avoid another bankruptcy. Surprising very few people, the country's economy has taken a huge blow since then and poverty is massively on the rise.

From what we hear from friends and relatives there, people grow increasingly dependent on government handouts to survive as there's not enough work. They simply can't afford to vote for somebody who might cut their subsidies... and sadly, many don't see (or can't afford to see) that this system simply isn't sustainable. Have the government cut spending, save money wherever possible, but don't touch mine.

  • Planning to replace the old TV coax cable with Ethernet cable so everybody in the house gets their own low-latency connection for gaming. The problem is that TV cable is installed in a daisy chain while Ethernet has a star topology, and there's only room for one cable from the basement to upstairs. So at the moment I'm pondering whether to keep the daisy chain and place a switch in every room, use some sort of MoCA (Ethernet over coax) adapter or go all the way and install fiber.

Also, we should really replace the carpet in the master bedroom with hardwood soon.

    (Edit: spelling)

  • Facebook/Meta has a decades-long history of considering nine-figure fines to be normal business expenses. I doubt they'll care. The only thing that could change this would probably be jail time for the managers who should have been aware of it.

If past behaviour is anything to go by, they'll probably try to make targeted advertising less obvious, then when caught cheating blame it on a simple mistake or a single rogue programmer. This has worked very well so far for most big tech companies.

  • Happy PDF-XChange user here. Fair pricing for home users / small businesses, great feature set, stable, regular updates that actually improve the product.

Actually had complaints of less-technical users at work when by some weird accident the Adobe product returned (sneakily bundled installer?) or when a Windows decided that PDFs are to be opened with Edge now, because the users wanted PDF-XChange back. Normally users either don't notice or don't care.

  • No argument here. Here's to hoping that the parents poison themselves first... though sadly, you can be as shitty a parent (or human being in general) as you want and still have as many babies as biologically possible, so some babies are just SOL either way. But that's an entirely different subject.

  • Bought it, tried it out and am already hooked. Thanks for the recommendation!

My impression after some two hours of playing:

As a sometimes lazy/impatient puzzle solver I appreciate the painless save/load feature. For a 'real' adventure or horror game there are too many guidelines to keep you on the right path - I'd call it more of an interactive thriller. Still the scary atmosphere and black humour are enough to draw you in and make for an enjoyable experience. Plus the various hints at the killer's identity and story keep you guessing. I probably should have gone to bed two hours ago but can't quit yet.

  • Either this ^^ or whatever has been lost is just a series of casualties in the search for money. There's not much money to be made by hosting free speech alone - that social media companies do what they do to enable free speech is a popular misconception. Above all they want to make money, and if you need to do that free speech thing at a net loss for a couple years before you start milking your users for all they're worth, then so be it.

As for Twitter, it could be argued that His Muskiness has been kind of a trial-and-error guy for his entire career - so far it's worked out pretty well for him. Twitter is just special in that his random 'let's just try this and see if it sticks' decisions instantaneously affect (and piss off) millions of people in a very public way. Maybe that's why Twitter is such a challenge for him.

As for Reddit, Spez doesn't exactly keep his admiration for Elon a secret. If Elon joked about improving Twitter's 'bottom' line by shoving a cucumber up his arse, Spez would probably be spotted in the closest supermarket's produce section within the hour.

  • No experience with Tailscale, but can confirm that performance-wise, WireGuard is a huge improvement over any other mainstream VPN protocol. It's also pretty robust and generally easier to use.

  • I came here to write this. "Pro-life" is a cynical bastard of a euphemism. All that these people are in support of is destroying the life (and potentially health) of pregnant women. If anything, that's anti-life.

  • Apparently they've been somewhat inconsistent with that. From what I've read, deleted comments have been more likely to be restored than edited comments, though either have been reported to have been messed with resp. left alone by Reddit.

I for one have replaced most of my posts with a "I hope u/spez grows tastebuds on his rectum" standard text some three weeks ago, which they appear to have left alone so far. But that's a sample size of one user so by no means representative.
