  • This is funny, I drive manual in the US where even most pickup trucks now have automatic transmission, and the two groups who have been impressed (I am a middle aged lady) are valets and mechanic shops.

I do think that for my 21 year old daughter it's an unusual skill and one she values. None of my other kids can drive my car, I had to teach that one because I let her use the car to go to college, I bike to work now since it's much closer than the school.

My ex can drive the big trucks with like 16 gears. And both he & my husband can shift motorcycles with ease, I struggle. I guess it would get easier with practice.

  • Sure but you can't have an endless increase in population. Whatever the problems of declining or stabilizing the population are, they need to be tackled, not ignored, yes. You can't fix them by saying just keep the pyramid scheme going.

The real problem is more like how many workers for each retired person. So there are other ways to fix that. Personally I'm down with working more years so that people don't have to have kids if they don't want to. I can't imagine forcing people to have children.

And you know what? Employers having to face a tight labor market doesn't sound like it's worse than employees having to find scarce jobs.

  • Mine is "You have reached my phone but not me, I don't really check voicemail, if you need to reach me, text." I still get voicemail.

Some voicemail the phone will transcribe, those I read but really don't listen to them.

  • No. Chronic back pain is not normal. Acute back pain so bad you pass out also not normal.

Occasional back pain, I think is normal - over my more than half a century I've thrown my back out about 4 times and it hurt for a few days each time. Then went away. That seems more normal.

  • We are part of the dwindling middle class & I ride an electric bike to work. So much cheaper than a car but so expensive for a bike, it seems a middle class thing. Though maybe living close to work is in itself an upper class thing?

Our city does a semiannual ebike voucher raffle thing with a large number of large vouchers (would cover the cost) for verified low income, plus a smaller number of smaller vouchers (still would be a big discount) for non income verified.

  • Arvo Part for sure

Big Thief, especially the song Change, and you might like the whole album, Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, though much of it is quite noisy, does not fit your "the same straight through" requirement it is very warm and human sounding. She is such a great guitar player.

Tomorrow I can ask my friend who listens to more of the stuff in your list.

Ok I asked my favorite ambient music person and he recommended Steve Roach, particularly the album Structures from Silence, David Helpling, Jon Jenkins, and Alexi Zakharov.

  • I do think of it as better to put my stuff here, on a non-corporate forum, than somewhere else. Not sure it rises to the level of doing good or being useful, exactly. Maybe, as I personally find enjoyment on Lemmy, so perhaps I am providing the same to someone else.

No I don't think you are wasting your time.

  • Dunno. Maybe, because sometimes I see the cars are parked outside, but often people just drive into the garage and close it, enter through some door inside it.

I really can't overstate my disdain for this design.

  • I'm a tall lady (for my area, though shortest of my siblings), about the average height of guys here, and yeah. Some guys have sounded very accusatory actually - as though I grew tall on purpose to make them feel short. Oddly enough, none of those were literally short guys.

No big deal, I like my height, shorter is not something I've ever wished to be. All 3 of my long term relationships have been with guys about my same height.

  • Cook it all. Save what you don't eat in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Cooked noodles are so useful. Fry them with chili paste, yum yum! Make peanut sauce and eat them cold. Even just tossed with sesame oil and salt they are pretty good.

  • I think it's more like government can ban what can be sold as food and make advice. They can't really stop you from drinking bleach or eating the grass in your yard or whatever. They can only prevent you from feeding it to someone else or selling it as food.

Meat isn't a food that could be banned in the same way as, say, Red Dye #4 or force-hydrogenated fats or high fructose corn syrup. They could make farmers cull whole herds of cows if mad cow broke out i guess, but there are wild hogs, backyard chickens and goats, it's just not a controllable food.
