  • So, this is a basic security principle. If the system of access is too "secure" or too inconvenient, people will create workarounds.

Need keys for all the doors every second of every day? You'll find duct tape on all the latches.

Password is 15 characters and changes every 60 days? You're going to find post-its under keyboards.

Spread all digital content across 8 streaming providers that cost about $180/y? Torrent time.

Nintendo wants to brick users for trying to play an out of region game they paid for? They'll never pay again and will reverse engineering your shit out of spite.

Same thing we saw with the music industry utterly failing to embrace internet distribution. Limewire and bearshare are their fucking lunch.

When will they learn to just make access easy? People, generally, would rather pay than pirate but when you start making shit difficult, nobody wants to play your games anymore and you see massive losses.

Meet your customers where they're at!

  • Funny, I experimented with DDG, and they gave me a wikiHow with instructions on how to spend your final days if you know you're dying. I guess the search engine makes all the difference.

  • I don't know, all I know is that my driver's license is already compliant with that, I think. All I had to do is bring a few extra things to the BMV when I renewed the license. I didn't really think much of it at the time but it's one of those things that's nice to have and didn't really cost too much extra.

  • Correct. I did follow up today and read some more sources and it sounds like it's not quite as simple a story, but the dependence on the US military seems to be a significant issue. I found a better article with a more nuanced take here if you're interested in that sort of thing: https://theaviationist.com/2025/03/10/f-35-kill-switch-myth/

  • My understanding is that that plane needs to "call home" daily or it won't work.

I couldn't find the article, but found a more recent one that basically agrees with you, except on the whole replacement of the computer systems. That plane took so long to complete and had so many problems, im betting it's easier to design a new plane rather than reverse engineer this one but that's neither here nor there.

I think the largest issue is the over-dependence on the US military across the board which as you mentioned, we see playing out in the Ukraine already.

Do you think the EU has what it takes to rebuild fast enough to stand up for themselves alone?

I hope so. I'm not informed enough to know.
