  • I have one of those perches that mounts on a window with suction cups, and sometimes I close the curtains over it. My cats absolutely love hanging out in the little "tent" it creates. They don't ever cuddle with each other, but I've caught them peacefully hanging out in the "tent" together.

  • Maybe you're thinking tabby? Brown tabbies are often referred to as the "standard issue cat", and are commonly found as both XX and XY cats. Torties are black/brown and orange, and their coloring is the result of having one X chromosome for black/brown, and a second one for orange.

My apologies, I just find their genetics so fascinating!

  • FYI, the catnip that comes with scratching toys is often pretty shit quality. If you really want to treat him to the nip, get some high quality stuff. From the Field and Yeowww! are two brands that seem to usually be pretty high quality, and silvervine is a related plant that may be even more potent for some cats.

  • Not quite a command, but I seem to have confused my oldest cat so that he thinks "excuse me" is a threat. He'll be blocking a doorway, and if I say "excuse me" as I try to pass, he hisses and possibly swats, but if I just silently try to squeeze past, we're all good. Currently working to undo that one.

  • In your opinion, how should they be crediting it? I'm having trouble trying to imagine a good way that it could be credited within the song, and I can't imagine very many people actually pay attention to the credits for music, especially when so few of us are buying physical copies anymore.

I've definitely experienced feeling annoyed at the new songs, but some have grown on me, and hearing the samples often leads me to add the original to my playlist. I've actually been having a lot of fun trying to see if I can name the original artist & song title whenever a new one pops up.

    • When listening to new music, I'm constantly recognizing how heavily they sample older songs that I remember listening to when I was a kid.
    • A night out with friends often ends at 9 or 10p because we're all tired.
    • A night out with friends often includes a lot of discussion of various health issues and encouraging each to see a doctor.
    • I'm finding myself more and more avoidant of new technology. Or maybe it's just that I'm getting more concerned about maintaining a little sliver of privacy?
  • added sugar in the form of sucrose or honey in samples of Nido, a follow-up milk formula brand intended for use for infants aged one and above,

I hate that it sounds as if I'm defending them, but the only specific mention of honey does say it was in a product targeted at children over 1 year old. I believe the recommendation I've heard is that honey is dangerous for children under 1 year old. But fuck, if unsweetened products are good enough for infants in wealthy countries, WTF are they doing adding it to products aimed at infants in poorer countries??

  • Not everyone who plays the lottery plays it consistently. I think I'm reasonably responsible with money, and I'm probably spending something like $20/year playing the lottery. If I won, the very first thing I'd do is get a lawyer. I wouldn't even tell my friends or family until I got things sorted with a lawyer.

  • I'm so sorry! It's so tough when they just don't have the strength to pull through, even with all the support you can give them. If they don't make it, at least you know that you gave them their best chance at survival, and that they were able to experience love, instead of dying alone in the cold.

  • I can't speak for all other animals, but I imagine it's often for similar reasons as why they do it for cats: removing the hormones means they're much less likely to display unwanted behaviors such as marking/spraying, territorial aggression (fighting) towards other cats, and roaming. Those behaviors all stem from the desire to mate, and if they don't have testosterone from the testicles, they don't experience the desire to mate. Unless you don't mind the smell of concentrated cat urine everywhere, adult male cats with testicles don't make very great house pets.

With female cats, they completely remove the ovaries (rather than doing a tubal ligation) for similar reasons. If they did a tubal ligation instead, the cat would still go into heat, meaning lots of yowling and trying to escape, and an increased risk of marking/spraying, just no longer able to get pregnant. In my region, they also usually remove the uterus, but it appears that varies globally.

  • You could probably describe me as a "functional alcoholic", so I find it pretty hard to imagine that I could be compatible with someone who never drinks. If I were to casually get to know someone through platonic interactions (mutual friends, sports, classes, etc.), I might be able to get to know someone well enough where it could work, but if the initial "get to know you" phase is through 1 on 1 dates, I just can't see it working out.

  • Hahaha, definitely something that has crossed my mind more than a few times. I definitely see marriage as a business arrangement between good friends that hopefully includes a romantic/sexual component. Just not really sure how/where to go about interviewing for that role. Lol.

  • I'm just not thrilled about the idea of sharing a home with a dog, and cohabitation is something I'd like in a long term romantic relationship. I grew up with dogs, and lots of friends family have dogs, so it's not an absolute, 100% deal breaker, but I hate when they jump on me, I don't enjoy their "kisses", and I'm easily irritated by many of the noises they make when I'm chilling quietly at home. I'm also easily irritated by noises that humans make when sharing close quarters, but it's rare to really notice those on a first date.

I also live in a dense area with very few private yards, so anyone I'm dating likely has a similar living situation, making it so that dating a dog owner has more overlaps than I'd like compared with dating a single parent of a young child. If you want to take an overnight trip together somewhere, you either have to bring the dog/child along, or you have to find a sitter.

On top of that, I have young adult cats, so the possibility of eventually moving in together becomes much more complicated.
