  • One of the most prominent generative AI tools that has been making headlines in the last few months. Stable Diffusion is specifically meant to create fully artificial, photo-realistic images. If you've ever seen one of those "all of these people don't exist" montages, it was almost certainly using images generated by this tool.

  • I knew that New York field office was going to show up the moment I saw "FBI" and "Giuliani" in the same headline.

Something is rotten in the FBI. Hopefully most of the rot is concentrated in that place and not spread throughout the whole organization.

  • Anyone dumb enough to post about that kind of thing on Facebook... I don't even have words. That would have been dumb in 2003, let alone 2023!

Also, I am enjoying the mental picture of how fast this guy's MAGA friends reached for the FBI hotline when they saw his posts.

  • Nice to have some variety and choice, and this is certainly a very solid first version! Always room for improvement, of course. :)

    • How to log in the first time is not at all obvious. If that empty circle was not in the corner where most Lemmy instances have a login link I would never have found it. At least this is only necessary to find once, but still, there's room to put "Login" text in that space.
    • I like that the left sidebar with my subscribed communities is collapsible, but the community sidebar on the right is not collapsible. I think the latter is much less useful or commonly used for most users, so this is an odd choice IMO.
    • Three vertical scrolling areas is not super great. I also get a horizontal scrollbar in the community list when collapsed. Why make the left and right panes "sticky" and scroll with the main column, then remain in place with further scrolling. If the right sidebar was collapsible, I don't see why scrolling with the main column would cause problems.
  • It's always so eye-opening to read about a larger-than-life personality like Brady considering themselves an introvert and being bullied in school. I am glad he got to a point where he is happy and can share his story.

  • Going to? They have always been here, but like the rise of TERFs or Cubans in Florida, now that a lot of the LGBTQ spectrum has gotten some progress--enough that the T part of that list is being addressed--some people are gonna play the "got mine, fuck you" game.

It's a good reminder that even people who agree with 99% of what you do can still be assholes somewhere deep down in their cold hearts.

  • I don't use it, but my impression is that people who prefer MQTT either have a lot of other devices already working that way, or use additional programs like Node Red to handle some of what HA can also do which require MQTT.

The first part is very understandable, as that's pretty much why all of us likely end up with a favorite protocol! I didn't really plan to be mostly using Zigbee and Hue devices, but now that it's the case I am going to keep going in that direction even more.

  • If you already have a Hue hub, you can integrate with that from HA without new hardware or a direct connection. That is what I do for some of my Hue bulbs, but I do also have a Zigbee radio plugged into my Home Assistant Blue hardware as I have non-Hue Zigbee devices, too.

My experience is that Hue devices are the most reliable of everything I have in terms of both response time and connection. Zigbee devices vary a lot in quality, but my biggest issue are some switches that occasionally (but repeatedly) have to be re-paired, but generally as long as HA recognizes the device the reaction time and reliability of Zigbee is pretty solid.

  • The vibe I get is he wanted to make a Star Trek show, but since he’s that comedy guy he probably got it greenlit as a comedy and then just slowly morphed into just Star Trek while the producers weren’t looking.

This is actual reality, so you nailed it. Seth approached Paramount with a pitch for a nostalgic reboot of the TNG era, they said no, so he went to Fox who he had a great relationship with due to Family Guy and created The Orville.

Whether the producers were unaware of the slow transition to actual speculative fiction or not is unclear for the first few seasons. I think the final season shows that it was overt, however, since after changing networks the whole tone, production quality, and even the actual time length of the episodes all changed.

  • Packing the court to a few dozen and having the justices rotate randomly would do a lot to prevent corruption. Nobody would know which justices are going to hear their case and there would be more justices to bribe. Do both of those together and we're most of the way to restoring the court's legitimacy.

  • How did he back down on student loan forgiveness? Biden administration is still pushing and working on that issue.

What do you think the President can do to "fix our broken system riddled with corruption" while also fighting a very real threat to the end of democracy? That is really the job of Congress, and Biden has said many times that he'll sign whatever the Dems send him. But they don't have the votes there and everything is even more chaotic, but at least blame the right people.

  • As an American, I'll be the first to talk about the inadequacies in our electoral system, especially for President. However, I don't think the tradition of incumbents getting the 'benefit of the doubt' and skipping a primary are a problem. They also aren't part of the 'system', that is entirely the choice of the DNC. Presidents are limited to two 4 year terms, so why not run back-to-back? It works most of the time.

The rest of the system is fucked.
