  • I haven't fully settled on a "home" instance yet.

I bounce around between Lemmy.world, Beehaw and Kbin the most. As things stabilize with the various software updates and federation between instances gets worked out I will probably settle on one, but I could also see jumping to more niche instances (really hoping a sports-related instance like Fanaticus takes off) being the long term strategy, too.

  • There was a good API before Elon essentially shut it down. But that is irrelevant.

The reason mass data scraping like OpenAI does would not rely on an API is because they are getting data from the entire Internet (and other sources that aren't online). They want raw data and they want as much and as varied as possible. It's much easier, cheaper and practical to build tools that scrape websites generically than to integrate with thousands of completely independent and different APIs.

It's the same reason that Reddit complaining about "AI taking all of our data" is bullshit. "AI" is just a convenient excuse and the most recent tech buzzword.

  • The same way any large web service would identify a sudden increase in traffic, whether malicious or not. For the servers I manage, we end up dealing with more unintentionally out-of-control bots than we do legitimate hack or DDoS attempts.

  • I have a cheap 'food maze' that is essentially this but also with some covers that slide or hinge. I started just putting food so it's visible but after a few tries my cat figured out there are hidden treats, too. Cats are curious, so they enjoy the hunt, too!

  • We're replacing signs all the time. Start adding both, then eventually remove Imperial if it falls out of fashion. It doesn't need to happen--and arguably shouldn't!--overnight or otherwise short period of time.

  • I don't see how AI is going to solve any of that if the intended result is to make getting actual support as frustrating as possible. If anything adding AI to the mix will just make things even more frustrating--but simultaneously also harder to pin down why so it could be stopped.

  • One thing that an AI could do better than humans is to actually stay on top of software changes over time. The number of cases where I have been following official documentation, only to find out that the current version doesn't actually work that way is absurd--and it would still be absurd even if it was only 1 (it's not).

Assuming the AI is able to access and understand the source code, it could at least make sure the current methods or variables or whatever match what the code does at any given time. We'd still need humans for other parts of technical documentation, at least for awhile yet, but this part is something that is already much better handled by a computer.

  • I think you are making the mistake of believing what Trump supporters say. They claim they like his 'off the cuff' speaking style but what they really like is all the racism.

Plenty of politicians have a more natural and "common" way of speaking but also make coherent points. Trump is not unique in any way from that angle.

  • It's hilarious to me that Elon insisted on having a headshot and being mentioned first in the team description. Everyone knows he isn't doing anything of value, but he has to appear as if he's writing the code himself because his tiny ego can't tolerate "just" being the money guy.
