i’m not sure you quite remember the leap in performance that chrome was.. it was night and day, and literally ushered in the era of performance being an actual concern for browsers

as much as i hate google, you’ve gotta credit them with starting that

and at the start, many (myself included) believed that googles motivation was to make the web fast to compete with native apps (they wanted the web platform to be what everyone used on their phones), because google can serve web ads across all platforms on the web, but native they mostly only control android

that still might have been the entirety of their original intent too! but now they have that dominance, they’re being evil with it

i think it’d be possible, but probably more about sponsor ads entirely rather than youtube ad revenue… i believe that’s the way most youtubers make the majority of their money anyway - ads from youtube are worth peanuts

it became clear to me that the main discovery page on youtube would never be of any use to me when it suggested a video entitled “Andrew Tate Tucker Carlson Interview” by the channel “Gentleman Masterclass” and i almost projectile vomited all over my keyboard

if you’re only going to be using those services through the proxy, it can also be a useful security upgrade to not forward their ports at all, and run caddy inside docker to connect to them directly!

if you forward the ports (without firewalling them), people can connect to them directly which can be a security risk (for example, many services require a proxy to add the x-forwarded-for header to show which IP address originally made the request… if users can access the service directly, they can add this header themselves and make it appear as though they came from anywhere! even 127.0.0.1, which can sometimes bypass things like admin authentication)

kinda makes a very “us vs them” mentality though… seems like it could easily lead to people being required to have accounts on big instances, or ad supported instances having “premium content” or something like that: basically everything we want to avoid

you rely on centralised entities every day to use the internet… ICANN, IANA, and a few more right at the top, government agencies to manage IP ranges etc, whoever owns your IP block, whoever provides your network… TBH you rely on cloudflare even if you never pay them because they CDN half the damn internet. you reply on google and amazon simply because again they host services you use

don’t kid yourself, the internet works because of centralised bodies; not despite them! DNS is the least of your concern; at least those names are commoditised and have enough scrutiny (unless you choose a TLD that doesn’t have favourable TOS) BY those centralised authorities that they’re pretty untouchable short of legal challenges

from what i understand, the big change in chat-gpt4 was that the model could “ask for help” from other tools: for maths, it knew it was a maths problem, transformed it to something a specialised calculation app could do, and then passed it off to that other code to do the actual calculation

same thing for a lot of its new features; it was asking specialised software to do the bits it wasn’t good at

useful thing to remember about these systems: you fuck up and it’s a high likelihood literally nobody at the company can do any work because all their files are inaccessible

that’s like… $10000/hr in lost man hours alone, let alone reputation from not being able to respond to customers accurately, possibly missed SLAs or other contract obligations

to say they’re not the same is… well, it’s not wrong, however they’re comparable in this context. if you say it’s not the same thing, you’re either arguing in bad faith or you made the exact point we were trying to: the only reason 1 is acceptable and the other is not doesn’t stand on logical foundations
