  • It can be bad. I also have this superpower, I can pop my ears (open my eustachian tubes) by flexing my throat muscles. The bad part comes when this happens on its own over and over and makes me dizzy. Thankfully that's only happened twice, but once was almost a whole day. I pop my ears much less now to try and avoid overdoing it.

  • It has been interesting. I wanted to teach at university so I went straight into a PhD program after my 4 year engineering degree. Found out that being a professor, at least at an ivy league school, was 10% teaching and 90% funding and politics, also did not mesh well with available projects and support, dropped out with "half a PhD". Worked 12 years at steel mills, the first one sucked but I learned a lot, the second one really developed me into who I am now from an entrepreneurial and leadership POV. Went to business school at night and simultaneously got a Manager job at a shitty company, got fired, got an engineer job elsewhere and quickly promoted to manager where I rocked the house. Left for a senior engineer role elsewhere with better pay and work life balance and I am loving it so far.

Lots of luck, lots of effort, lots of learning through failure and success. Best thing I did was probably business school. The engineering degree is what gets me in the door but the tools I learned in getting my MBA have proven more valuable because most of the problems I need to solve are not exclusively engineering problems.

It was really weird to go from a high performer at one company to getting fired at the next. Thankfully I've had two great experiences since then, so I guess it was probably them not me. Getting fired messed with my concept of self worth for a bit but I have worked through that now.

  • After our last cat had kidney issues, new cat gets wet food daily. We basically go 50/50, half wet food half dry food. That works out to half a 5oz can a day, 1/4 in morning and 1/4 in evening. She normally eats the wet food within ~15 minutes and nibbles the dry food throughout the day. Not sure if it helps her kidneys but she has maintained a good weight and has the softest coat.

We also use a water fountain to try to encourage drinking, but I don't think she drinks any extra because of it.

  • Old school blink (Cheshire cat, dude ranch) Mark and Tom had a good interplay, and we're each suited to the songs they sang. They may still do that but I can't listen to anything newer than Mark, Tom, and Travis show

  • Zeiss lens wipes are the best, but soap and water work great too. Rubbing a towel on your lens will scratch it eventually.

Your glasses are probably cheaper buying them from LensCrafters on your work insurance, but I discovered Roka and will not go back to others even though it's more expensive off insurance. Their glasses are so light, comfortable, and stay on my face. I've been alternating years, glasses one year sunglasses the next to save money so I can splurge on good frames.

Progressive lenses are hella expensive and become necessary in your 40s. They are nice to have when you need them though.

  • Homelessness is evidence of a failure or lack in our social safety net. Providing housing is a necessary part of rehabilitation, but we also need to work on fixing what got them homeless in the first place.

  • Mom is cool, super accepting. My dad is a weirdo trumper. My MIL is also accepting of many but is a bit racist and not yet accepting of trans folks.

All the grands were worse. The surviving one isn't overtly so but is passive aggressive about it, so better than my dad at least.
