Keys can be confiscated. But in most juristicions you can't legally be forced to give up a password.

Please take the threat modelling of other people seriously without second guessing it. If people explain openly why they have a certain threat model, I might already give them away to potential attackers.

Those people need to learn how to fend of these attacks somewhere, too.

Depends on the attacker. For example: In Europe, law enforcement can legally confiscate/steal your laptop and read out the keys from RAM. They can't (legally) force you to give up your password.

As others explained: If the FDE key is in RAM, I'm vulnerable. My thread model includes a stolen Laptop with the attackers able to freeze my RAM and reading out the keys.

Short interception here: I actually appreciate the question. I think I didn't thoroughly explain what bugged me with FDE. And the X Y problem is something I'd like to be aware of.

The implied problems with FDE might actually not fit my situation or threat model, why I think it was important to elaborate.

Edit: Just thought of it in this way: In this context, I'd rather be asked than have things inferred about me.

Simple convenience. I usually don't have the time to wait one or two minutes until my full disk is decrypted (I am often late and the only person in a group meeting who brought a laptop for taking minutes).

I also use a weird keyboard layout (Neo 2) and I never got grub to load with that layout. Typing a 40+ passphrase in QWRETZ is just cumbersome to me.

Also: I hate to admit it, but I am a bit vain and simply would like a nice gui for entering my password.

Edit: I forgot to add that I'm playing with the idea of getting a surface tablet and installing linux on it. Then I couldn't count on awlays having a usb keyboard with me.

Why would you want it floating if every window is maximized? These requirements contradict each other.

The linux community is IMHO a bit focused on tiling WMs. I like tiling as well, but in this case: the vanilla gnome workflow is kinda 70% of what you want already. The rest can be done via extensions.

Since tiling is not wanted, I think gnome + extensions should be the way to go.

What you want should be quite easy to achieve with i3/sway or awesomewm. i3 has a slew of possibilities for "bars", even the xfce/kde panels: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/i3#i3bar_alternatives

Great, I agree! ... But unfortunately, OP used data fragments that IMHO promote complacency (i.e. general "progress") instead of celebrating victories of social movements.

Considering that most progress in the last few hundred years has been fought for (sometimes violently), like weekends, the 8 hour day, etc. kinda proves you wrong.

Apart from that: As an anarcho-communist, I don't consider the USSR to be socialist (worker's control over the means of production). And even the USSR never called itself "communist" (a classless, moneyless society by the standard "to each according to their need, from each according to their ability"), since that would have meant that the state would have had to be dissolved. The USSR was state capitalist (total state control over the means of production) and therefore still adherent to the "growth at all costs" paradime.

There is more thanone communist ideology. Murray Bookchin developed a ecologically stable form of communism starting in the1950s.
