  • As I stated in another comment it is not impossible that they may leech the fediverse to death but I think its highly unlikely. The fediverse is much more than just a decentralised platform. It is an amalgamation of many platforms with different userbases and different goals. In order for the fediverse to collapse, everything would have to be replaced together as well as the flexibility to continuously integrate new services, as is the case here now.

In the case of XMPP, the community became a passive spectator of google's advance and was eventually replaced by it. But as long as the community does not become dependent on the big corpos in any way and regards their contributions more as a nice bonus, something like this will not happen. It is this self-sufficiency that allows the freedom to go one's own way and to keep the power decentralised in the community. I have to admit, however, that this can be a big challenge, but one that is nevertheless manageable.

  • So waht you are saying is

    1. A big corpo enters the fediverse
    2. It federates with other instances
    3. Then most of the people just switch over to the corpo app because the alternatives are worse
    4. The corpo leaves the fediverse with the userbase

I'm not saying it's impossible, but in my opinion it's very unlikely. The fediverse, unlike XMPP, does not consist of a single service but of a multitude of platforms. To shut down the fediverse, you would have to destroy all of these platforms and create your own platform that can do all of this and also flexibly integrate new services, as is currently happening with git hosting sites. I don't think even the biggest companies will be able to break this power of the community.

  • I'd say it like this: In general, I have nothing against growth as long as it happens of its own accord through clear advantages over centralised and closed systems and not for the sake of growth. Growth must never happen at the expense of principles.

  • So?

XMPP still exists and is an active community

Honestly what do you want more? The platform itself is still great like in the old days and improvement just depends on users like me and you who are willing to contribute to their vision of openness and freedom.

So instead of nagging and crying about the demise, you can simply use this platform yourself and tell people who are looking for security and protection on the internet about it.

  • Why would other instances have to move away to the corpo protocol? I mean, if they screw them over by creating a walled garden in the fediverse let them do whatever they want. They have absolutely NO power about my self hosted instance and the instances I federate with no matter how big, important or powerful they are. If they break the protocol by injecting harmful content you can still stay on an older version or fork it. Its open source for a reason.

Also if the average joe moves over to the corpo platform: it's their decision. The only thing I can do is provide an open and transparent alternative and inform people with my conviction. We have to give up the idea of hoarding users and forcing security and privacy on them no matter how well we mean it.

  • I am anyway in favor of distributing the data shared here under a strong copyleft license. A legal notice that every instance can include in their TOS. Data from users of this instance and all posts on this instance should then be open and any products that build on this data or use it anywhere must also publish it with the same license (AI, data brokers, ...).

Together with the AGPL for the backend code, this could provide a robust framework against exploitation. Anything these companies do with the data would have to be made available for everyone, which could only be an enrichment for the general public.

  • I am also not sure how EEE is supposed to work with decentralized platforms. In the end, everyone can say "that it's all too much for me and I'll build my own network with like-minded people, just like at the beginning of the fediverse."

  • That's exactly what I've had in mind for years. And when I saw forgejo's approach, I was totally blown away.

  • Great. Now we just need a tag so I can mark this thread as resolved ;)

  • Nope. Never had a linux phone and never tried postmarketos. But waydroid is pretty usable now.

  • Be me

    • sing up at tidal
    • go for one month master hifi subscription
    • get a student discount and pay only 50%
    • transfer all music from spotify, soundcloud, yt music to tidal
    • downloaded the whole music collection in highest res flac format through tidal-dl
    • cancel subscrption
    • repeat once a year
  • postmarketos is the most stable and matured mainline linux mobile os. For 2FA, banking apps and android apps in general there is waydroid ehich I already use on my fedora laptop.

  • Well the only app I can recommend is fedilab. It's primarily a mastodon client but it can also display pixelfed styled posts and it has its own dedicated mode for peertube which honestly doesn't look too bad. But I haven't used it much since there isn't enough content on peertube.

  • I'm waiting for my preordered shiftphone 8 to be released. They promised to cooperate with custom rom devs and improve the experience compared to their current model the Shift6mq which already can run postmarketos.

Also Nextcloud is a fantastic alternative to google/microsoft/apple cloud.

  • Same experience here. They needed 2 and a half week!

  • God forbid! These long and unnecessarily clunky can stay away from me.

  • Me too! Lucky luke, Asterix and Obelix, Tintin and all these great classics.
