  • I'd advise you to go with arch to familiarize yourself with the basics of a linux system. Everything is already precompiled for you so all the packages and the kernel shouldn't take long to download. If you then need a new challange you can also go with gentoo. It has some specific knowlegde around it's super powerful package manager and about configuring the kernel but besides that everthing should be very much the same. Of course this comes at the cost of compiling all the stuff you need by yourself so...

  • When I was in your position one of the first things I did was to install arch. It is very similar to gentoo but you don't have to compile everything yourself which is just more practical in the beginning. You still have to learn all the basics and the arch wiki is one of the best of it's kind. I am myself to install gentoo as a next step but the procedures are very similar to arch. Also with arch you can reinstall the system in minutes (with enough proficiency) but on gentoo or LFS this depends on how beefy your computer is. With a regular desktop you will sit there staring at 5the compilation for quite some time which was the biggest drawback for me. It will cost you more time to repeat a process and for me the best thing on arch was to srcap everything and restart to try something new.

One last thing: You will always learn as much as you are willing to understand. You can install gentoo and arch withoit any problems by just following the great wiki pages but you won't learn much besides typing some commands. But doing some research wbile installing will help you far more. Also learning linux is a process. It's not only about the system itself but rather about the community it's culture as well as the philosophy behind it.

  • Love it!

  • I am really behind everything you proposed there. It seems well thought through and realisable.

  • PC won't boot

  • With SearXNG you get all of the search engines in one. With some configuration it gives me the best results I ever had. Not too niche not too spammy. Also having direct torrent and fdroid/apk search integration is a blessing!

  • Great! I really love playing with the dualsense and I use it for all story games I play.

  • I cant find it anymore but I thought that this was actually part of ActivityPub. Also I've seen a comment exactly pointing this out in the issue thread.

  • Posting my comment here to improve visibility. I'll refer to this comment for further clarification.

    • As already discussed in the github issue tags should imo be the lemmy implementation of hashtags as they can be seen on mastodon. ActivityPub already handles them well and on the lemmy side it's just a matter of redesigning in order to display them as more reddit like tags. We have the moderator tags which look pretty nice already. Also important tags like the Mod or NSFW tags could be displayed in a red or orange color which signalizes the importance of the tag.

    • My second suggestions was also already pointed out but as on reddit communities should be able to predesign some tags that the users will be able to select (just like on reddit). Additionally users should be able to add maybe up to four other tags to their post the number would have to be discussed with the community to prevent tag spamming.Adding user based tags should not be a big problem for moderation as on mastodon anyone can give themslves any hashtag they wan't which seems to work well. Additionally (community and even instance) moderators would have the ability to search for inappropriate tags in bulk which they can then further analyze and remove if it contains inappropriate language. These user based tags could be displayed in a small field right below the post body wheras the important tags as well as the community picked tags would be displayed above the post just like on reddit. In a further step an option could be implemented to hide the user given tags entirely or just collapse this field.
  • Great as I don't like Github and dont have an acxount there I'll try to make suggestions here. I'll refer to this comment for further clarification.

  • I'd go even further and say: A platform where you can share any type of media (text, pictures, video, 3d models, ...) but with threads and forum like comments as seen on lemmy or reddit. Each instance could then limit the upload size up to a certain limit or even use a decentralized type of storage like IPFS or something similar.

Also I'd love to emphasize user based moderation/curation. I'd love to have a platform where you can see everything without any censorship but there are easy ways to filter the content locally using user built presets or just a very granular configuration.

And last but not least: Single Sing On. ActivityPods is already in development so I hope all the best.

  • The developers have made it clear that they want to have a robust, sophisticated and scalable ecosystem before they do any advertising. The project is therefore mostly known only in cypherpunk and niche privacy communities, and so are the things that are sold on the public marketplace.

However, all the tools and automations to run an efficient online commerce already exist. For example, there is a connection to WooCommerce and scripts that facilitate the listing of items.

So from the technical side, practically everything is already available in the marketplace. What is missing is a web integration which is urgently needed for a broader adoption and easier possibilities to buy PART the native currency. The developers are currently working on the latter by developing Basicswapdex.com.

  • I like to have a history of my posts linked directly to my account. It's what I contributed to the community and I'd like it to be a part of my profile.

  • Nextcloud is pretty straightforward and easy to use. It will ptobably have all the features you need or buy you some time to set up something more professional if you really want.

  • Sure but currently switching is a huge pain in the ass as you cant really take over your posts not to mention the migration of your communities which is currently impossible. So all the people saying somwthing like "just switch to another instance" tend to forget that this isn't really possible at the moment.

  • Not with me. Pirating for personal use is perfectly legal in my country.

Do we have an account migration tool yet and can somebody recommend a nice instance?
