  • What a fun coincidence; I just watched RedLetterMedia's review of Event Horizon the other day. Spoiler: Jay kind of enjoyed it. Mike decidedly did not.

I'm generally not crazy about horror/thriller movies, but I did read The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton recently. It's a great book!

  • I wonder if it's also that now their investors are going to expect growth on top of whatever accelerated growth they have experienced in this WFH era. meta wants a nice, predictable cruise uphill, not a sprint that they'll now need to continue, progress be damned.

Side note: that's a theory I've had regarding technological advancements in devices like phones. Apple, Samsung etc. want small incremental advancements they can drip-feed to consumers for stable growth, so they probably try to keep the big leaps infrequent. Yeah I know Moore's Law can't go on forever, and it might be getting to that point soon... alright I'll take off the tinfoil hat.

  • That's interesting. I should explore the syntax of my native language more, haha. Thanks for the sources!

As for line breaks, I'm not sure if some variant of \n works (guess we'll find out), but I just hit enter twice when I want one.

  • You just hurt my brain, but in a good way, like scraping off a layer of rust.

On the first point, you've convinced me. I wasn't thinking about the context of the phrase. After factoring that in, it makes more sense the way you put it.

But I'm still stuck on the second one. I don't disagree with the way you explained it, but for some reason I can't reconcile your reasoning with my intuition. Unfortunately, the only way I can rationalize it is by gesturing broadly toward older literature, from the early 20th century. There's something about the artistic style people used that I've always found beautiful, and my usage of "not one", to me, kind of fits. I admit it makes no logical sense, but in my mind it feels as correct as anything else.

Regardless, I'll consider your logic next time I use "none" because you're definitely not wrong about it.

  • Regarding the actual article, I have nothing to add that hasn't been discussed already (and at this point I bet nobody will see this comment anyway). However, the specific grammar error in the title annoys me to no end, so I wanted to vent.

    ...one in 10 residents are...

It should be "...one in 10 residents is..."

People seem to forget how to conjugate after three words. Similarly, all too often I read something like, "None of these things are..." I don't have an English degree, but in my mind parsing that phrase is like nails on a chalkboard.

For the 0 of you still reading, a tip: You can omit certain parts of the sentence - and expand others - to test how the subject-verb pair sounds.

"None of these things are..." -> "Not one of these things are..." -> "Not one are..." Wtf??

Anyway, thanks for listening to my Ted Talk Ralph Rant.

  • I feel like such a boomer for doing this as well, but I've had precisely 0 issues when my internet goes down or signal gets weak. No buffering, no problem.

Been doing it since high school when I had the first-gen iPod Shuffle. Good times

  • I’ve never heard that you’re supposed to not stop

If memory serves, that's what the person said. Then again, it was on reddit, so I should have immediately looked to confirm it myself instead of filing it away in the "pretty sure" drawer. Let's not mention that I started driving maybe 17 years ago, hah. Well, lesson learned!

  • I didn't even think that it would vary by state (of course it does), and I should have checked my state's law, but this community was made for a reason after all 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, my state says something very similar. Thanks for indirectly nudging me to do my own research!

  • That's great to hear. No sense in reinventing the wheel, especially if the wheel uses quaternions for its 6-DoF rotation 😂

Thanks, and good luck to you as well!

  • "Goober" is a more whimsical descriptor than she deserves, but I'm with you.

  • See: a certain owner of a (much less than) $44 billion social media company.

  • I picture it as taking off in a plane full of their employees and customers, and climbing as high as possible. Then, as soon as the engines stall or fuel runs out, the execs casually jump out and pull the ripcords on their golden parachutes.

  • I had assumed it was a fabricated threat that came from "inside the house." Now it looks like it was a real threat from inside. I can't condone what the employee said, but I can sympathize with their plight. Not to mention that of all Indie devs whose workflows have likely been uprooted by Unity's selfish move.

  • What the other folks said. To add, there are several games made with Godot that look like they match Unity in terms of graphical fidelity. And if you're a boomer like me who doesn't care about graphics, there are cool games like Ex Zodiac

  • Last night I uninstalled Un*ty and replaced it with Godot, so I'm very excited to start learning. It's a little disappointing that it's not as "capable" as other engines, but my conscience (and future expectations) will be clear. And besides, to me game dev is about expressing oneself artistically and not chasing numbers and metrics.

  • I loathe seeing ads in any medium whatsoever, especially a medium I use for escaping this ad-filled apocalypse of a world we all live in. Why on Earth would I willingly force ads onto people who have generously supported me doing the thing I love most?

Disclaimer: I haven't made any games yet, but someday "soon"...

  • I kind of agree with @doppelgangmember but yeah, Bethesda has taken a very apathetic approach to fixing bugs, or even preventing them in the first place. They used the godawful Gamebryo engine for way too long, and their Creation Engine is apparently based on it. Of course they're on CE2 now, but I have little to no faith that they've made any substantial improvements since people will buy their products no matter what.

To be fair, I really enjoy almost all of Bethesda's games, which is why I'm so disappointed that they just don't (seem to) care. I'm definitely waiting for a super duper sale before picking up the game.

  • I didn't mean to make it seem like I had any opinion either way, just that it has received some hate over the years. I did some research - admittedly it was cursory - and it looks like the issues are somewhat exaggerated.

Canonical, it seems, has made a number of poor decisions but apparently they pay attention to user complaints and revert / make adjustments accordingly. Some of the controversial things I saw were related to the Snap package manager, possible telemetry, bloatware, and some partnership with Amazon.

Some of those things were either nothingburgers or simply overblown (one person said the only thing they could see as bloatware was... a few board games), so I would take their anecdotes with a grain of salt.

Again, I'm a relative idiot when it comes to Linux, but my takeaway is that Ubuntu suffers from the typical growing pains / compromises that a relatively popular OS will inevitably encounter. Especially when most of the Linux userbase consists of power users who prefer having complete control (which is perfectly fair too!)

Use whatever distro fits your needs; as long as you ditch Microsoft, you're making a good choice :)

  • I'm holding onto hope actually. I recently started dual-bootung into Mint and the installation process was a breeze. The only thing I could imagine a "typical" user finding difficult is setting up the flash drive for booting/installation. The UI is nice and familiar too. As a Linux newbie I hear that Mint is basically Ubuntu, and that (modern) Ubuntu is hot garbage, but even if it caused my computer to take an actual shit on the floor, it still beats Windows by a country mile.

I think (perhaps too optimistically) that with some more awareness we could see a fairly sizeable migration.

  • IIRC Reagan had Alzheimer's while in office and his staff tried desperately to hide it. Unfortunately, this shit ain't new.
