  • The fascists hate when you point out that Palestinians are Semites. Because that means supporting their right to live is not, in fact, antisemitic.

  • I last lived in Seattle in 2000 and suspect I'd not recognize the place now. But the transit options have improved significantly.

  • I guess Austin and Bastrop, Texas, aren't all that special. But those are generally intermittent environmental violations, not 24/7.

  • I haven't read it in full since middle School, at which Point I couldn't grasp persuasive Prose with two Hands and a Flashlight.

One obviously puts a bit of Effort into such a Piece. We sort of wend through a Narrative, then the List of Grievances, and the final Graf lands hard.

The unfortunate Thing is the Parallels to To-day.

  • They all use algorithms -- that's what software is -- but equating what's been done for decades in software with AI is disingenuous. By this definition of AI, that was baked into Quark 3.3 and Photoshop 5 (not CS5, just 5).

  • And with all the microplastics polluting the ocean, that makes them ...

    plastic sturgeons.

  • Great! When Austin moves to Florida, that will be relevant.

  • I'll attempt to be civil here.

They can fuck right the fuck off.

  • Yeah, I'd be useless there as well.

  • Hey, Lionir, if you want some decent editing, I'm also available once you exhaust those options.

I'm a terrible call for copyediting outside of American English.

  • It's more basic than that to my mind, which you touch on in graf 3.

This model of "I fucking own you" between employers and employees sifts what people are willing to put up with. Add shitty outdoor conditions, and it's easy to see why anything else would look better.

    At least there's air-conditioning at McDonald's.

Employers seem to forget that many of us remember less-shitty circumstances, and, holy shit, do they get irritated when there's any expectation that the American Dream includes doing better than your parents. Even sole-proprietors who got in before the lower rungs were removed and refuse to believe the same opportunities aren't available as they task you with pointless things just to enjoy being in control while you can't afford housing.

  • Which can be done without a method that produces false positives on reasons to terminate coverage. Part of the premium is them doing due diligence. Satellite photos are not that.

Sure, come inspect the house once a year. I've no issue with that. Some sort of "AI" deciding it doesn't like your roof from a photo? Yeah, no.

  • That's valid on one level, except your driving record is an objective measure of your interactions with traffic infractions. Aerial photos are very much subjective -- and the determination is being made by automated systems, which inherently can only be objective. Wrong tool for the job.

  • My first year at the college paper, we had the photo credit in the cutline box in the library filled in as Tungsten J. Smith. The "J" stood for statinum, as in, right the fuck now, playing off tungsten being W on the periodic table. One of the other designers was into chemistry.

WJ getting credited in print introduced me to the problem of using something that at a glance seemed plausible on deadline. This was after my disastrous "just write something" hed on a sports feature of "My leaking heart" that the editor did not revisit.

  • There is an element of truth.

  • Here's a handy link to perhaps bookmark. The table formatting's a nightmare for the list, but that's Wikipedia for you.

  • The president later called for a “major investigation” into why some stars, including Springsteen, lined up to support then-Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 White House bid.

That pretty much tells you all you need to know about Trump's "interest" in democracy.

  • That's the one! Awesome! Thanks for the link.

I didn't realise he was from Niedersachsen ... that would explain how I ran into it in Hameln.

  • Wasn't a major sales pitch of Brexit claiming that funds previously sent to Brussels would go into NHS? Maybe I've been up too long, but I seem to remember some buses.
