  • The witchy one! Funnily enough, when I googled it for the population number, I found that there's also a Salem in my home state of Baden-Württemberg in Germany. I had never heard of that one, despite having been within like 15km of it.

  • Kirby's adventure feels really modern for an NES game, still holds up great to this day. The difficulty is also closer to what people are used to nowadays, compared to the punishing difficulty of many NES games. One of the few NES games I played through completely.

  • A few smaller ones that pop into my head are Boulder, Amarillo, Centralia (does that still count?), Slab city (not sure that counts either), Salem and Providence. Looking it up, the smallest proper city of these is Salem with 44k.

I could also probably name a ton of European city names and there will be small towns in the USA with that name, but that would kind of be cheating.

  • The lemmy devs should really focus on proper content deletion tools. It's not just the images, it's very strange and inconsistent overall. When I delete a comment, it's seemingly still visible to many people and collecting up/downvotes even many hours after I deleted it. On the other hand, when a post gets deleted, it's completely gone, to the point that I can't even look up the discussion that I had within that post, just my own comments on my profile.

  • War and Genocide?

  • So did the Western allies commit a genocide in WW2? The large number of people being Germans that are nazis? You could classify pretty much any war you want as a genocide that way: French that are Monarchists/Imperialists/Republicans, Americans that are Confederates/Unionists etc. Were all of these just committing genocides against each other? With that definition you'd end up with genocide just being synonymous with "war".

  • War and Genocide?

  • Every war has human suffering, it's not sufficient to classify it as a genocide.

Now, when I look at the Iraq war, the goal was to destroy Ba’athist Iraq. By the same definition, wouldn’t that war have been a genocide as well?

The destruction of a particular government does not fall under the definition of genocide, no.

  • We selectively breed dogs for traits and do not allow their offspring to procreate. I’m sure there are puppy mills that kill the “undesirables” too.

I never denied that. But in the description they conflated it with just talking about genetics affecting a persons/dogs characteristics. There is a difference between acknowledging that and the act of selective breeding to reach certain characteristics. It's not eugenics to say "a person may have a genetic tendency towards 'trait x'", eugenics would be "let's selectively breed people to encourage 'trait x'".

  • Yes, the Human relationship to animals can often be pretty paradoxical. People may love their dog and maybe even look at it as almost an equal, but don't mind animals with even higher intelligence (pigs) being kept in horrible conditions so they can eat them. Pug owners may think their pet is so cute, but are willing to ignore all the human-caused suffering that pugs have to go through to look like that. Ultimately animals are always treated as less than human, even if people may delude themselves otherwise.

  • You seem to confuse the concept of Eugenics (selective breeding to improve "genetic quality") with the general idea that genetics can influence things like personality, intelligence etc. The latter is pretty much undisputed. But as Humans are seen as individuals with rights, selectively breeding them like you would dogs is seen as unacceptable.

  • That's true, though notably even the solo and friends-only options in SoT are still entirely online and share their progression with the main online mode. I agree that it would be cool to have a modding-friendly option that's completely separate.

  • I'm glad to live in a place where that kind of surveillance is already illegal. I recently read that in some places, it's already commonplace to track every single keystroke and mouse click on workers' PCs. That's bad enough even without putting AI and facial recognition into the mix. Truly dystopian.

  • Depends entirely on how you use it. There are many perfectly valid uses for the word, like in science or on a checkbox where you select your gender. The point where it can get offensive is when referring to individuals or groups of women as "females" where you could instead just use "women". It's language often used by incels and the like.

  • Only recent Apple product I have is an iPad. Android still isn't that great when it comes to tablets and doesn't have many tablet optimized apps. The iPad is nice for drawing using the pencil and Procreate, watching movies and reading the newspaper. I don't use any of the Apple ecosystem stuff like iCloud etc. Some things are mildly infuriating though, like having no real browser choice (hopefully soon to change).
