  • Depends, I went from BBSes to slashdot to koro5hin to reddit to kbin and do not feel old.

To me old-age begins when you feel you are past the time when you can learn/experience something new and/or new tech no longer feels exciting/interesting but scary.

I have met people in their 80s who have a younger outlook on life than some people in their 40s.

  • They don’t want control, only profit.

And they will struggle to get that. They will spend billions and years setting up the infrastructure to extract resource wealth of the region, which is considerable, then the problems will start.

  • all they have to do is hold the lie together long enough to sell.

That last phrase is really doing a lot of heavy lifting. When you own a large chuck of stock in a post IPO company, trying to cash out large ownership stakes has the effect of crashing the price.

My expectation is that what ever the IPO price is, one year from then (the usual minimum time to be able to sell a stake like spez will have) it will be lucky to be 5% of the launch price.

  • Welcome to the age of positive feedback. The ride will not be fun but it will be spectular.

Sadly children born in the last decaded will look on the 2020s as the good old days and they will be right.

This quote, the origional souce of which is hard to find, is sadly relevant.

When the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught, the last river poisoned, only then will we realize that one cannot eat money.

  • Yes, because they are currently the ones with the support (or at best acquiesce) of the most of the tribes.

But the currently in the previous sentence has a very short half-life.

I am not telling China to stop, far from it. It will be fun to watch their grand plans to fall to shit the same way the USA's did.

I thought that the billions they have already pissed away on the belt and road project would have been a cautionary lesson. But it seems not.

  • Afghanistan was an ally of Alexander as well, until such time as it was no longer beneficial to the tribes in control.

The world sees Afghanistan as a country in the modern sense, when it is actually a tribal society that is no more politically cohesive than it was in Alexander's day.

When you are travelling and ask an American where they are from, they will often say their state, rather than the USA. To them this means a lot as they identify with their state more than with their nation but to outsiders it means nothing, we see than all as Americans.

Afghanistan is the same but a 1,000 times more intense. Ask them what they are and they will reply Pashtuns, Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek, Turkmen, Baloch, Sadat, and about half a dozen others.

  • Take The Money and Run?

I was thinking more along the lines of: The Gambler

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em

Know when to walk away and know when to run

Except they should have walked away about 4 years ago...when their chip stack was a much larger pile. Now they are trying to run with what they have left.

  • Flag displays that depict a “racial, sexual orientation and gender, or political ideology viewpoint

IANAL but wouldn't the stars and stripes also fall under that definition?

I keep hearing how it is the symbol of democracy, which I am fairly sure is a political ideology.

  • And yet the 10,000 years of the clock's run time is not even a single tick in comparison to geological time or the lifespan of the sun.

Human life spans are so short in comparison to the wider universe it is hard for the human mind to grasp. We are not even a blink in the eye of a person who lives to 100.

  • Ah well, it looks like it is China's turn to pour money and material into Afghanistan in the hopes of profit and control.

I am sure it will go as well as it did for the USA, the USSR, the British Empire, The Russian Empire... and Alexander and the Macedonians.

  • Honestly, why bother?

Management has been wanting to cash out for a decade.

The IPO will go ahead, the reddit of the days of yore is dead. It will not improve.

The horse is dead, beating it will just make you hot, sweaty and your arm sore.

No matter what you feel about the place it was never going to go any other way.
