I’d argue that jokes not being written for everyone to understand/enjoy isn’t a matter of being wrong. It’s part of the entire subjectivity of comedy.

I think this is my first time seeing the “/s” on lemmy. And I really hope it doesn’t follow users here. We fully understood the sarcasm without it. It was honestly so much more a statement with ironic wording than it was even sarcasm.

I feel like we’re better than this. We can’t complain about Hollywood and advertising dumbing everything down to the level they think we need and then turn around and spoon feed each other the most basic forms of speech.

I completely agree. But this is also just a case of who is posting/voting. It’s not a conspiracy to exclude the rest of the world. It’s just happening based on who is populating the community.

US-based news outlets almost exclusively cover the US. US schools focus heavily on US history and current events. Shit, even when a world event happens, we count victims by nationality! “Two Americans (were among the 198) dead today in…” is not an uncommon framing device for “international” stories (are they even international stories if they’re told that way? It’s debatable). We US-based people simply don’t know much better. I know this is a smaller sampling of the nerdier, more intellectual Americans, but we are still affected by our upbringing and access to information. Even world news leans heavily in our direction (in the english-speaking world, at least. As well as the Spanish-speaking world—those are the only two I can give my opinion on, anyway).

Blame capitalism. We output so much media and tasty bits of insanity that focusing on the US is profitable and entertaining.

Point being, I agree, but I’m not ignoring or voting down any actual news from elsewhere. I’ve just don’t really see it. I’d be happy to see it change, but it starts with the people who post the news. I’ll support you in your quest to post more. But until then…I mean, you’re pointing out just a trend, not an effort by everyone to exclude information. Go ahead and post! You have my vote.

While I disagree that it’s “by design,” I will grant you that they definitely benefit the more loathesome the far right becomes. It wasn’t a feature, it was a result they didn’t foresee that they’re just taking full advantage of.

Their goal is absolutely to get elected and stay in power, it’s not to do away with the fascist edifice quickly being built higher and higher to the right of them. Trump’s brand of open racism and hostility was a boon for the democrats. They raised an obscene amount of funds from citizens while continuing their donations from business. Trumps basically widened their revenue stream. If we stay mad and scared, they stay flush. Which…huh…is very much the far right strategy as well, isn’t it?

It’s incredibly fucked up, because while everything above is definitely true, it’s also true that they are the finger in the dike between neoliberal corporatist bullshit and those fascists taking full power. Both are pretty fuckin distasteful options. And it’s hard to do anything…but whether it’s distasteful or hard or awful or any other horrible adjective, fascism is still fascism. A lot of us have the privilege of not being a clear target when fascists come to town. The marginalized groups are the first line that go down if we fail to keep up the fecal facade of neoliberalism. A shitty decision, but one that we unfortunately have to make every two years.
