  • Not even just that. They approached games that has already promised not to be exclusives, including kickstarter games that had already been funded with that promise, as well as buying games and removing them from other stores.

They were paying to have the games removed from better stores so they wouldn't have to compete. That is an example of anti-competitive practices, not just making a better product and charging more for it.

  • Anyway, companies should hire people who are both passionate about the source material, and want to make something cool and new in that world - not robots who are just going to recreate the original work beat for beat. If I wanted that, why wouldn't I myself just, you know, read the book?

While I agree in general, different mediums have different strengths and weaknesses, and different appeals. For example, a book is great at telling intricate stories, but will generally fall flat when trying to create an exciting spectacle. Even if the story is very similar, these different strengths (esspecially, but not exclusively when the material is tweaked to account for it). The Lord of the Rings movies come to mind as a good example of that. The books create a cohesive world with intrecate details everywhere whereas the movies, feature so many stunning scenes that you just can't do justice with words alone at the cost of many of these details. You can cover the same story without major core changes while providing a very different and still worth-while experience.

  • First thought is that its almost certainly something from Warhammer 40k. Probably one of the Dark Eldar (or just their civilization as a whole). They're a super-advanced, post-scarcity civilization that basically worships torture and uses their technology to "perfect" it.

    Edit: spelling

  • I'm admittedly not the best person to talk about it, since I don't really get the appeal, but in general, Twitter/Mastrodon is for following people you care about. Its largely about people rather than content or discussion, similar to a list of blogs rather than a forum. To find content you can look at tags (mostly to get a general pulse on the topic) but will mostly want to find people to follow, who's content you want to read, such as friends, politicians, celeberties, or influential figures in your field.

Unfortunately personally, I found no one on Mastrodon that consistantly interested me (beyond a couple bots copying Twitter feeds) but hopefully you'll have more luck.

  • Unless I'm misunderstanding something, the one that is now being sold for $400 used to be $550. All the LCD models have dropped in price (with the 64 GB and 512 GB models being discontinued) and the OLED filling in the now open higher price tiers.

  • Discord for games with friends, and for a couple niche pieces of software too small for forums.

Lemmy for broad-appeal topics like world news and less niche tech.

And Im not sure if it still counts when I just lurk now, but Reddit for everything else, since none of it moved over to lemmy. Gaming subreddits, more niche tech, history and accedemic topics, local and lifestyle stuff, ect.

  • Old one is still solid (and now discounted) but this offers some nice, mid-generation upgrades. If you already have one, or want one at a discount, stick with the old model, otherwise this is a nice upgrade for basically the same price.

  • I do, but I keep default settings within Ublock. I figure theres probably enough other Tor users using Ublock that it won't stand out too much, and frankly, the internet feels unusable without an ad blocker nowdays.

  • Calling 2023 the best year ever in gaming is a real overreach. It hasn't been as bad as the last couple years, but its hardly that standout, and the last couple years aren't exactly a high-bar.

I mean, what notable new games came out?

    • Hi-Fi Rush
    • LoZ: Tears of the Kingdom
    • Baldur's Gate 3
    • Spider Man 2
    • Super Mario Bros. Wonder
    • Street Fighter 6
    • Dave the Diver
    • Starfield

All solid games, but its not a long list, and other than maybe Baldurs Gate 3, none really stand out when compared to every game ever released.

Pulling a random year, lets say 2011, because its when Minecraft released, you have:

    • Minecraft
    • Portal 2
    • Skyrim
    • Dark Souls
    • Batman: Arkham City
    • Mass Effect 2
    • LittleBigPlanet 2
    • Uncharted 3
    • Gears or War 3
    • Deus Ex: Human Revolution
    • Limbo
    • Dead Space 2
    • Total War: Shogan 2
    • The Witcher 2
    • Red Orchestra 2
  • The big news here is just them removing the bans on AMD users.

That said, 100% agree on the need to re-add some of the more casual gamemodes. Personally, I'm really missing arms race. It used to be my go-to for warmup or just when I wanted to chill and click some heads.
