Since America's namesake Amerigo Vespucci was an immigrant, what should the United States of America be renamed to? (no wrong answers)

  • Serious answer: the Viking settlers named the land "Vinland" long before Columbus was even born. That name is of Germanic origin, same as the English language, and would be appropriate for settlers of Germanic origin (England, Germany, etc.)

    Alternatively, a name in the a Native American language would be most appropriate given that they were the original inhabitants of the land.

    • YSK, that on most smartphones, if you press the power button 5 (or more) times in quick succession, you can quickly call emergency services.

  • Note: if you accidentally do this, do not hang up. Calmly tell the operator it was an accident a mistake. Hanging up will send your info to them and they will call back to make sure there isn't an emergency.

  • I'm not an expert but:

    Resurfacing might fix this if it is solid hardwood, since you are essentially sanding down a layer and refinishing the new top layer. The dents look kind of deep, though, and may require extra sanding to take the wood down far enough.

  • Pocketbook devices mostly run on Linux, except for a few android models. I have the Pocketbook Basic Lux, and I side load manga onto a SD card for it. It has a bookstore that can be entirely ignored, and you can use it without ever connecting wifi. I use Kindle Comic Converter to resize all my manga to the same resolution of the screen to prevent artifacts when the software downscales the images, as well as significantly reducing file size. It has a very simple menu and does not come with any bloatware or unnecessary additions. It is simply an eReader.

  • THIS! Me and my mom thought it was a fun fantasy story from the commercials. The kids going into the forest into another realm of fantasy creatures. All of that in the commercials was just 1 scene in the movie, and the rest was boring or heartbreaking. I will never forgive their marketing team.

  • Uh oh I have 517 hours in Planetside 2. That's only counting Steam game time, and not using the standalone client before I played on Steam or time spent in the closed beta.

    I have almost 1,000 hours in Final Fantasy XIV and I have only finished the main game and first expansion. Although I mainly played before the first expansion came out and got back into it in 2023.

    Other games include: World of Tanks Blitz with 755 hours on Steam, not counting mobile; Lord of the Rings Online with 714 on Steam, not counting standalone client before it was on Steam; Elite Dangerous with 687 hours; Star Wars The Old Republic with 572 hours on Steam, not counting the standalone client before it was on Steam; Elden Ring with 360 hours; Mount & Blade Bannerlord with 180 hours.

    Honorable mention: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind on original XBox. I don't know how many hours I sunk into that, but it was a favorite of mine.
