  • Lemmy.ml is fundamentally a communist community. Leave it and join somewhere like Lemmy.world if you want to be part of a community that doesn't have a political agenda. This energy you are expanding complaining that a social network isn't meeting your expectations could be more productively spent just checking which ones do and which ones don't. You might as well be complaining about all the Star Trek memes on the Star Trek Lemmy instance.

  • Stop hanging out in spaces defined by political affiliation then. It's your responsibility to chose spaces that meet your needs. Don't hang out in the wrong place then sulk because it's not what you want it to be.

  • It is fundamentally a communist instance. The reason people are annoyed at you is that you want a "politics" free experience but rather than make the effort to curate what you expose yourself to you're just wandering into places and insisting they be what you want.

  • I think it probably makes more sense to relate it to the cost of something else rather than an actual dollar amount (as that will always change over time.) IE. If a meal out costs more than three visits or McDonald's or whatever it may be. FWIW, the Amendei Porcelana bars are about £12 and the Grenada co about half that.

  • I don't think anyone is arguing that because there is an option to install via Steam that people should stop downloading directly from Godot's website though. Both of those things can exist beside one another.

  • I'm curious, do you think it's more that you notice a difference but it doesn't add much for you or that side by side you couldn't tell which bite came was ordinary good quality food and which was exceptional or special if you were told?

  • As others have noted proper good quality fresh truffle is really worth it (unlike all the "it's no nicer than regular food but we've served it on a statue, covered it in gold leaf and sprinkled salt onto it off the top of a bald man's head" fancy food you can spend a fortune on.) Freshly shaved truffle is like if Willy Wonka decided to turn his hand to making the perfect savoury food experience. It smells like the most satisfying food ever and then the instant your teeth slightly penetrate the surface of the shaving it somehow seems to instantly fill every space in your head with that scent at double the intensity and your whole mouth is awash with a uniquly rich and warm flavour.

    I love single origin chocolate and was once gifted a bar of Amedei Porcelana (sometimes called "the most expensive chocolate in the world.") It was, unsurprisingly, a perfectly executed bar of chocolate. Texture, balance of sugar to cocoa etc were all flawless. The flavour was delicate and perfectly balanced. It was like the most refined expression of the exact central archetype of what chocolate should taste like. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who would like to experience the most perfectly chocolatey chocolate. Personally I found that while it was a flawless execution of a straight down the middle chocolate and I am very glad to have had it, I prefer a bit more character and so my favourite bar is still the Grenada Chocolate Co 71% (which slaps you in the face with big juicy tropical fruit flavour and is overall not quite as refined as Amedai Porcelana.) Though I've not had the chance to eat either in several years so I suppose it's possible they may have changed since...

  • Truffle is one of the few rarified expensive things that I've had that is genuinely incredibly more tasty than anything like it. It's one of my favourite foods but I have not had many opportunities to eat it.

  • Because if you want professional game developers to exist then you have to be welcoming to them when they are just aspiring game developers. Kids who play lots of games and want to have a fiddle around with tools for making games are much more likely to do so if there is a way to access them that they are familiar with and already associate with gaming.

  • Regan's administration started the war on drugs. Convicting drugs users of a criminal crime has the effect of taking the right to vote away from people who tended not to vote for the Republican party and allowed them to be legally used as slave labour. At least one member of that administration has explicitly stated that this was a strategic decision to win elections.

  • Unreal is good if you want to work on big expensive projects at big companies. Godot is good if you want to work on your own projects today and potentially but not definitly work on small to middle-sized projects at small to middle-sized at small to middle-sized companies in the future. Unity is fine if you want to work on small to middle-sized projects at small to middle-sized companies now and potentially in the future.

    Which sucks. There ought to be a clear and unambiguous path to chose for someone moving into game development today but since Unity keeps making weird choices that are hostile to developers whilst not continuing to improve at a good pace, it's hard to say for sure which engine will fill in the not-Unreal Engine part of the market unless you have a crystal ball.

    Realistically the best thing is to have as strong a foundation in programming generally as you can so that switching engines is minimally disruptive (as there will always be a need to do so eventually. There's very little chance one single engine will continue to be the standard over the 40+ years of a career.)

  • I'm not so sure about that. Godot is fantastic for making the sorts of projects they are describing. But if the relatively minor difference between Unity and Unreal's workflow are a turn off for them, then the consciously different workflow in Godot is probably going to be a significant barrier. Personally, whilst I love Godot because it's FOSS and lightweight and a great platform for building smaller scale games: a big part of the appeal for me is that I find the Unreal and Unity ways of doing things stupid, confusing and clumsy and the Godot way clever, clear and elegant. I know lots of people feel the exact opposite.

  • I think the game "development" industry is run by people who don't understand the difference between a game designer and a game developer. As such there's lots of people who only know as much about game design as the average developer does being tasked to do game design work and vice versa.
