  • Wasn't one alleged point of DOGE was to reduce government waste? Alcatraz was closed due to it being a ridiculously expensive prison. Much more than any other prison at the time.

It was this, not the famous escape of 1963 that caused it to close.

  • RFK jr. Isn't just anti-germ theory. He doesn't even follow miasma theory... he follows something even older and more stupid: terrain theory. The idea that you get sick BECAUSE you were unhealthy and not the other way around. That diseases are opportunists looking for malnourished or lazy or weak individuals (weak by their own choices) than just something that can happen to anyone.

You know those girls who died of measles? He insisted it happened because they were malnourished. No amount of evidence presented by doctors could convince him otherwise.

Basically we have an absolutely insane conspiracy theorist who has the medical beliefs of a medieval quack in charge of US health.

  • You are correct. It was never that progressive. Every micrometer of progress was hard won and incredibly fragile. But I still never realized it would fall apart that fast. Even though I knew there was a powerful fascist element in the US. The way they took over by storm is kinda incredible.

  • When I was a kid growing up in the Middle East in the 80s and 90s I idolized the hollywood/US TV western lifestyle. They all seemed so effortlessly lavish and nice. All sitcom/domcom families had large homes and all the kids had their own rooms and those kids didn't need an allowance. They could get jobs like waitresses or paperboys that earned a half decent pay that allowed them to afford whatever the hell they wanted. I lived in Dubai they forbade all child labor. Even if those laws were ignored in some circumstances, they were generally quite strictly enforced. So unless you were a debt-slave camel jockey kid, you were not going to work at any job.

I legit thought that that was the reality of many people. Even young adult slackers with chronic unemployment issues still somehow had small houses bigger than any apartment I knew. Of course this was myth, and ever since the 2000s rolled along with nearly 40+ years of stagnant wages AND rising costs of everything else meant that that idea is dead.

  • You don't know half of it. The sheer amount of overwork farmland is going through world wide is causing soil depletion like no tomorrow. We may even end up seeing a full blown worldwide famine in some years time when it gets to the point that we simply cannot revitalize farm land.

We produce such an incredible glut of food it isn't funny. If we took all the surplus that we make we could feed the whole of China for an entire year. That is how much is being thrown to waste.
