  • When you have the talk, make sure they know that the two rules to follow like gospel are to always use protection, and to never use something that doesn't have a flared base.

Probably save any further interventions for if you discover that one of those gift cards was used by a horse loving kid to get a flared base and head.

  • Well if you're an American, expensively.

The IRS is determined to make sure that they juice every last drop out of you to make sure that you feel the hurt, because Americans denouncing their citizenship are one of two kinds typically, either A) Political migrants who are renouncing to make a statement about some great failing of the US, usually something the feds have dug their heals in over like Vietnam, or B) Financial migrants who are trying to escape tax increases.

Either way, the feds have a vested interest in deterring that behavior as much as possible and so the US is one of the few places that gets away with enforcing an arm and a leg exit tax and IIRC still makes you pay another 10 years worth afterwards basically to punish you for trying to skip your duty to your fellow citizens to support the country and her infrastructure and services that everyone shares.

Elizabeth Warren had actually proposed tightening the noose even harder during the 2020 primaries because where Republicans loose their shit over the idea of women being able to outsmart abortion restrictions, Dems, and especially progressive Dems, loose theirs at the thought of some Elon Musk type being able to take the bag they made off American infrastructure and labor and run away with it to avoid paying the fair share back.

People usually call it brain drain but really it's all down to tax dodging, between the high rate of immigration and envy of the world higher education quality (so long as you can afford it), America is not running out of smart people without a 20th century style purge of the "intellectual class" by authoritarian militias because smart people aren't dumb enough to go along with their strong man fetish.

Tl;Dr, the IRS REALLY wants to make sure you know that renouncing for financial reasons is gonna be way more costly than what you're gonna save by fleeing to a tax haven.

  • See you're absolutely right, but simultaneously, there's no other system that allows your savings to potentially beat inflation, and at the same time, it's impossible to completely stop inflation and deflating currency can actually have VERY BAD consequences for small markets not able to operate during spending strikes. Even a federally managed pensioner's fund based on a Norway style sovereign wealth fund will inherently rely on this inherently corrupt system to preserve people's hard work and savings against inflation long term, they're just gonna be kinda smarter about it and able to be fired if they fuck it up or act too obviously corrupt.

  • Basically a for profit philanthropist. He does dumb content that brings in the dough and then uses that for big bombastic charity projects.

A lot of people like to hate on him because "rich kids shouldn't be the ones helping others out of poverty!" but like, as long as that's the way the world is I don't see any issues with it since he does actually go pretty above and beyond with his acts of good will, legit building homes for the poor, wells for communities with low safe water access, paying for sight restoration surgeries for the poor, I think one of his vids was traveling about and providing community solar networks to impoverished communities, which as someone who works in that field, he's doing a double service there since even if they end up having to pay for it themselves, it'll be a net savings vs traditional utility costs.

  • If you're genuinely serious, a beginner's server box and some CLI training will usually be enough for your average person's storage needs, especially with a proper personal VPN connection.

Only people who need entire racks are those aforementioned gurus because they're working with whole computer images which can be hundreds if not thousands of gigs, and people who are trying to torrent all of known visual media in human history to create a personal free streaming service, which will almost definitely land you in a court room courtesy of your ISP ratting you out to the authorities.

  • I mean if you've met some of the old boy shot callers who work with or for the CIA, yeah no they could totally pull the disguise with a wardrobe change and some fake sunburn makeup.

Most of the actual work that goes on there is data analysis, and that means tech workers, and that means the saged guru tech workers who live out of a single family home that's less expensive than their home lab, their backup servers, their backup backup servers in a compound in montana, the backup backup backup servers in a bunker in New Zealand, and the thoroughbred they got for their horse girl daughter because these guys are usually also complete suckers for their kids or even younger siblings if there's a wide enough age gap, as I found out that one such guru was technically the half brother of this girl I had AP microeconomics with.
