  • The wording here makes it sound like we hunted horses for the specific purpose of having sex on them, and honestly, I'd probably be running as fast as a car if that kept happening to me too!

  • Us. They basically tried to beat pursuit predation by outrunning the distance humans will be willing to track over.

It did not work, they went extinct in North America because of how much it did not work.

  • The same factors that make people more prone to gambling addictions or gaming addictions basically.

And that's not just me being sarcastic, social media companies literally gave their algorithms instructions which more or less guarantee that content will be presented in a way to strike those same addictive nerves as other gameified addiction traps.

  • A stock is a piece of the deed or title or charter or whatever that is the essence of the company as a piece of property.

You can buy that piece of the property for a value which fluctuates based on the value of the company as a whole, your fractional piece is tied to the value of what it's a piece of.

The stock market is the cumulative eco-system in which people are buying and selling stocks in different companies based on fluctuations in value of different companies at different times.

The name of the game is to basically always be selling just before a downturn and always be buying just before an upswing, so that the money you've bought the stocks with is always growing, because your bought stocks are always growing in value, until you decide to sell them.

There is a lot of other factors to it but that's basically it. It's a system in which you temporarily buy small pieces of companies for the purpose of selling them once they're more valuable than they were when you bought them.

If you're thinking that sounds a lot like crypto, you're not wrong, but the difference is that stocks actually have a modicum of regulation that are meant to keep people from getting fucked over quite as hard as crypto has done. Doesn't mean that premise is always lived up to, just look at 2008, but overall the stock market represents the safest form of investment you can make other than stuff like federal investments or buying a home that you intend to pass along to your kids.

  • Fun fact, only one trebuchet has ever been deployed for combat in the new world.

The conquistadors and coalition forces built one during the siege of Tenochitlan, they tried to fire it but the sling snapped, rock went up, rock came back down.

Thus ended the storied military record of trebuchets in the new world.

  • There are now at least a dozen calendar reformists edging on posting a rant about this lol.

Worth noting though that this has mostly stuck around because any attempt to switch to a more divisible week structure is met with resistance from Christians and Jews since going off 7s messes with their calendars.

Of course you could use just two liminal days inserted outside of the standard month or week and basically have a calendar where holidays stop jumping dates.

  • I mean English is a germanic language, not too surprising how german phonemic spelling would look considering how much of our fucked up current system is owed to trying to make loan words consistent with their language of origin.

  • IPA is less readable, also this is an orthographic alphabet, the true letter count is much smaller, and it actually gets even smaller if you use the "sloppy" version, which is basically just grabbing an Alphabet language Gboard for þ ð ŋ and ſ, using ue oe and ae as needed, and using u o i e a as you would their dotted (or undotted in i's case) counterparts and just hoping context makes clear what the literal text doesn't necessarily.

  • I'm more partial to an entirely new alphabet,

R fully becomes a semi vowel same as U to W or I to Y, several grammar words get Shavian style abbreviations for brevity, and where french has accents, spanish has the ñ, and german has umlauts, the expanded english vowels have single dots the way lower case i already does.

  • There's actually an art book out there about exactly this concept, a zoo built for prehistoric animals that's actually designed and maintained properly and it's basically just a concept art book about a mildly futuristic looking zoo featuring dinosaurs as the enclosure occupants.

    Edit: found it, https://youtu.be/7iTP-afrjeY?
