  • We already have too few options to pick from and these days it's often the case that we don't even get to choose for ourselves.

The company I work for has a new device security policy that states you need direct approval from the CTO to use anything other than a Mac for work - and even with the approval you're restricted to Windows or three specific Debian distros.

I tried looking for a new job and from the first three companies I spoke to, two of them also mandated the use of Macs.

  • For a while, burning CDs was my way of keeping backup of stuff. I might still have a bunch of them stored somewhere and if I still had any way to read them I would be picking them up right now to see which ones still worked and if there was anything interesting in there.

  • Now that you mention it, I remember that I would play it with mouse + controller for some reason (back at 1.0), not sure why I picked that as the best way to play but there was probably something bad about using the keyboard and also something bad about not using a mouse.

  • The slow movement is what kept me from playing it forever. I know there's mods that improve it, but I wish the base speed would be higher.

Back at 1.0 launch it also had a bug where walking diagonally was even slower, so that may have affected my judgment as well - it was fixed after a week or so.

  • It happened by chance the first few times. Projects were failing and management wanted more resources, I was assigned and noticed problems that hadn't been noticed. After a few different projects with different issues, I became the default guy to call into ongoing projects. At the time I had already rejected a few promotions because I didn't like any of the other roles above my position, so I eventually asked management to create a new role for me based on that.

  • I remember one past job when the company decided on a Friday to let someone go but thought it was best to wait until Monday morning to give them the news. Then he started the day and immediately got sacked.

  • Software Diagnosticist, maybe?

My main role lately has been to jump into failing projects and put them back on track, then leave it back with its own team. Sometimes I'm debugging software, other times I'm "debugging" processes or even team structures. Occasionally even the whole idea behind some project is just messed up and nobody realized.
