  • Many immigrants live in multi-generational homes and more densely populated areas. While I am not going to say explicitly that immigrants will not contribute to a housing crisis, they actually contribute less than many other factors.

There are a number of solutions we can take to the housing crisis, none of which are immigration reform. First and foremost we need to stop private equity from owning residential property. We need to implement rent control and punish landlords for withholding supply. We need to stop criminalizing the unhoused. We need to build systems of reparation for addicts, and medical support for those struggling with mental illness.

From there, we need robust high quality public, not affordable, housing. Even in means tested areas, affordable housing still prices out many of the most impoverished.

Finally, and this is a dream and likely not a reality in my lifetime, we need to destroy the system in which property ownership is the primary system in which we accumulate generational wealth.

Immigration reform will not even make a dent in the housing crisis, and our current path is resulting in the suffering of other humans.

  • The residents of Texas are not completely to blame. Texas has the highest rates of voter suppression in the country. Secondly, the Texas education system has been built in a way to persist the current leadership in the state. And finally, many of the people live in poverty and will likely die for what oil execs and politicians have done.

Wishing this is short sighted and is blaming the symptom and not the root cause problem.

  • Supporting artists directly via bandcamp and other options.

If you can't support artists directly, and would have to buy physical media which supports the record label and not the artist...pirate.

  • I tried tidal for a bit, but ran into a number of issues with the various privacy methods I used and the lack of a Linux native client made it difficult to justify staying.

I am currently running a navidrome server and supporting artists directly for their music where possible.

  • It blows my mind that these companies think AI is good as an informative resource. The whole point of generative text AIs is the make things up based on its training data. It doesn't learn, it generates. It's all made up, yet they want to slap it on a search engine like it provides factual information.
