  • That's the problem we had. Not only is actually making our duct work work probably not physically feasible, I can't find an HVAC company that actually tries to solve the problem I have.

It's "I'm not sure why you think that splitting my HVAC system left to right (the easy way) will help my problem with HVAC front to back."

I have a PhD in engineering and strongly respect the trades. It's just don't be stupid. And HVAC have to know a lot about all the various trades.

  • Ah. That explains it. Mini split?

Yeah. Our duct system is absolutely awful. We looked into mini splits to solve the problem before the geothermal. The ones with multiple heads were just ridiculous.

We did later finish our attic and put one up there. It's awesome.

  • Right, but honestly, she's the star. Mulder is the foil. (I mean. I'm sure any literary scholar would agree with you, but I empathize with her more. I suppose that's why I asked this question)

In any case, the current top post suggests that a lot of people don't actually remember her character continuing to be skeptical at the beginning of every episode.

  • Yeah. I suppose that goes along with the general theme as well. Just like the unresolved sexual tension and fabulous chemistry between Mulder and Scully.

Anyway. This is just a TV tropes kind of question. I wasn't expecting any sort of complex analysis. I just wanted to post about the x-files on a Sunday afternoon now that I'm done with all that I needed to accomplish.

  • Do you remember the 90s? Do you like sci fi?

Anyway, give it a shot. It's dated, but there's also nostalgia in it (for me at least).

Edit: the first season (even to the pilot) is good. It changes, but if you like the first few episodes, you'll like the series.

  • It does not. She is stalwart in her skepticism.

I'll grant your recollection a bit of leeway because when she's part of the action, she does believe. That was true from the very beginning though.

She just writes it off at the end and continues to be skeptical about every new weird thing. After a few monsters, I would start believing whatever Mulder thought.

He's not always right because he always jumps to aliens, but if she came to realize that monsters are real in her universe, she'd be a much better scientist.

Edit: I'm glad this got the support it needed. This response was pretty far down voted for a while. I know Internet forums can (and hopefully should) never be the arbiters of our understanding of truth, but positive communication is very important IMO.

  • My family disappeared into white trash before we know that answer.

Meanwhile, my wife can trace her family back to an early 19th century vice president and actual slave owners.

Edit: to be fair, I did my genetic analysis and do now know of distant relatives (whom I will probably never contact). I don't think that counts though.

  • It's surely not any different than a squirrel, ground hog, or wild rabbit. People eat those all the time. Even meat rabbits seem comparable in size to a guinea pig. You can also just put them in a stew.

Also, as I mentioned, larger animals are also more difficult because you can't just kill one for dinner. If you kill a deer, you have to process it to preserve it or share it with a larger community. Ain't no freezers.

Side anecdote: My grandfather, as a 9 year old, used to go squirrel hunting and bring them home for his mom to cook. Before you go thinking this is some redneck thing, it was long island, less than 50 miles from Manhattan. It would have been during the war though.

  • That they would be reserved for nobility seems like it must be wrong. These are tiny animals that wouldn't take much effort to raise. A small family could easily eat one. Just grab a pair and start raising them.

It's not like a cow where you need large amounts of grazing land and then when you kill it, you have huge amounts of meat to deal with.

This is why animals in English have three names. One for the animal, raised by the commoners with Germanic origin (cow). One for the meat, eaten by the wealthy with French origin due to the Norman conquest (beef). And one used in scientific contexts coming from Greek or Latin (bovine)

  • K. Have you seen the movie? It has a similar message to what I'm saying. Appreciate differences.

Would you like to make fun of me? Can you do that? I'd rather you do that than the behavior I'm criticizing.

Understand differences. A seven foot tall person is funny. Let's talk about it. Humor is for understanding. We're not bullying. We're enjoying differences.

And, unless you're a 7 foot tall woman, you're being offended on behalf of someone else. That's definitely not appropriate.
