  • Patiently false? LMAO. I said a decade offhand but to be more exact it's thirteen years. Thank you, Captain Pedant. 🙄

  • Yes, and my argument is that the lack of chipset diversity is holding the platform back. More recently, Google's doing interesting stuff with Tensor and Mediatek apparently made some decent SoC's. But Qualcomm still has way too much of the (US) market.

  • Fair enough, I'm privileged enough to not know the details. But all the big companies do shit like that

  • Cuz iPhone processors are objectively better? That wasn't the case a decade ago.

  • Right, and they've had a near monopoly on US Android phones for like two decades now. In processors and modems. They've gotten fucking lazy, and they're holding Android back.

  • That's a good point, our stupid federal policies are incentivizing this behavior from Apple. If they hire more Green Card holders, then they have employees that they can pay less, and they literally CAN'T quit for fear of deportation.

But Apple is also the richest company in the world and they employ enough lawyers to know that they're not supposed to do this kind of shit, so I don't really have sympathy for them in this case.

  • Huh, that was quick. Seems like manufacturers weren't cooperating, and then T-Mobile announced the Starlink partnership. Maybe they realized they just couldn't compete with that, so they pulled the plug.

Oh well, I for one was nervous about another Qualcomm proprietary thing becoming the standard; we've had quite enough of their anti-competitive bullshit recently. As evidenced by Apple absolutely spanking Qualcomm with their A-series chips' power efficiency for several years now. Embarassing time to be an Android fanboy.

  • Torrents still work, they'll just be a little slower and you won't be able to seed much at all. If you're using public trackers it works fine. But if you want to use a private tracker that forces you to maintain a ratio, you'll run into problems.

  • Behold! I have the answer, at least if you're willing to use Qbittorrent and the PIA app: https://www.reddit.com/r/PrivateInternetAccess/comments/81n70q/help_with_port_forwarding_on_qbittorrent/jr2mptg/

This is an AutoHotKey script that runs at boot. It basically babysits the Qbittorrent port for you, making sure it matches your randomly assigned PIA forwarded port. I'm guessing this is also possible using a different VPN or torrent client, but you'd have to find your own script for that. Also, make sure to bind Qbittorrent to your VPN interface: https://www.reddit.com/r/VPNTorrents/comments/ssy8vv/guide_bind_vpn_network_interface_to_torrent/

P.S. I should point out that port forwarding on your VPN isn't TOTALLY necessary....but if you don't forward ports, your download speeds will be slower and you'll barely be able to seed at all (this is known as a "dick move" and it will get you banned from private trackers).

P.P.S. I should ALSO point out that your forwarded port does not change very often if you keep your VPN connected! So you don't actually NEED this little script, you could just check the port once a week and make sure that Qbittorrent matches it. For example, I've been on the same port in PIA for at least a month now, and I've definitely rebooted my PC a couple times for updates. So it seems that the PIA app often just reconnects to the same server and uses the same port, but YMMV.

  • Absolutely, these are the numbers for Q3. They fucked themselves near the END of Q3. I'll be very interested to see their Q4 numbers.

  • The condescension was very much intentional, thanks for noticing.

  • I didn't find anything wrong with your opinion, and I never said you weren't entitled to anything. I'm just pointing out the dumb irony of taking the time to comment on something that you supposedly DON'T care about, in order to tell the world how LITTLE you care. If you really didn't care, you would have kept scrolling.

  • Yeah I have 8GB of RAM on my Macbook Air and it works fine, I just need to manage my browser tabs and restart Chrome sometimes. But if I was paying $1600 or more for a "Pro" laptop......the fuck?

  • I didn't say they're not allowed to comment. It was a shitty and useless comment, and I'm allowed to point that out, as well as pointing out the irony of taking the time to comment that you don't care. Thanks bud.

  • wow so brave, thanks for commenting to show how little you care.......?

  • Shit. That's a big upgrade.

Edit: To be more accurate, it's a LOT of small upgrades. Very cool.

  • You might not care much about Jezebel, but their parent company, G/O Media, also owns Gizmodo, Kotaku, Jalopnik, Deadspin, The Root, The A.V. Club, The Takeout, The Onion, The Inventory, and Quartz.

So if you like any of those (Lemmy fucking loves The Onion, right?) then this news should concern you a bit.

Also, RIP Jezebel. Sometimes they were edgy and weird for no reason but they also did some solid reporting over the years.

  • I'm actually trying PocketGuide, just started the 7 day trial. I'm really impressed so far, it seems better than Mint and the annual price is only $35 (which isn't free, but it's cheaper than most of the alternatives). I plugged in all my checking and credit card accounts and it's working great. It already told me that I'm spending too much money and I need to re-do my budget. 😂

It has a free version but you can only plug in two accounts so it's pretty useless (unless two is enough for you).

  • Sure, but from what I'm seeing, the article wasn't about them selling it. It was about them storing it, which only happens after you plug your phone in and agree to their terms.
