  • Australia has mandatory voter turnout, but you do not need to submit a vote. You just need to show up on polling day.

So just to clear up a technical misconception here - the wording in the Electoral Act is quite clear. All enrolled electors are legally required to vote. It's only a consequence of the secret ballot that makes this provision unenforceable, so someone can turn up and get their name marked off while not submitting a vote without facing any consequences, but it is technically an illegal act.

If the AEC were to come up with some way to determine that you didn't vote without betraying that secret ballot, they would be within their rights to issue a you a fine.

  • Yeah that's what made me jump ship to Boost - I sincerely doubt that even if I used Sync for ten years, the value of the ad impressions I give would be worth A$35. I can basically buy a huge number of high-quality games for that amount.

  • Ultimately this won't change unless young Democrats actually take over the party and shift the overton window back to the left.

This generally, and specifically electoral reform is the only way to get the USA out of its two-party hellhole.

  • It's still a marathon, but a significantly less annoying one that doesn't have large sticky mud sections randomly throughout (the metaphor breaks down a bit here...)

I used One Pace to catch up recently and it's very good - downside is a lot of the earlier arcs aren't complete yet, but the OG anime isn't quite as bad with those so it's typically ok to just watch the real one for those arcs.

  • Americans merely adopted the nonsensical measurements. The Brits were born to them.

  • I think it'll actually be Xarmageddon, which is like Armageddon, but much more woke.

I'm surprised he hasn't changed his name to Elon Mux by now.

  • Ok but who actually doesn’t know what a magazine is

    Kbin devs, apparently.

  • Android Debug Bridge - it's a tool you can use to access parts of Android you don't normally have access to directly on the phone.

  • Well Google has recently been forcing through its awful Web Environment Integrity proposal so...

  • I was also on the grandfathered Google Play Music pricing and saw the same email for increasing the cost of the individual sub.

The pricing makes sense in that context, since now the family plan is just barely cheaper than two individual plans (whereas that wasn't the case before).

This'll be a tough call, given I use YTM almost daily, and watch a lot of Youtube besides.

  • It's not the worst strategy (and is actually referred to as 'peppering' your password)... but if your primary use-case is websites and mobile apps, using a password manager like Bitwarden and randomly generated strong passwords is still a better strategy (and probably faster too, since you don't need to type it out manually anymore, and/or remember which flex you used when creating your 'peppered' password).

This is a good approach if you have to login to services that aren't via a web browser though - e.g. Remote desktops etc.

  • Bobby Kotick is likely on the way out at least (probably via golden parachute).

  • America really is an amazing country. I've never even heard of about half of this tier list.

  • Again, revenue. They report revenue because it's a nice big number, but it's different to profit (which is why a lot of people suspect they don't make much actual money, if any).

  • Revenue, sure - I don't believe Google shares profit numbers for Youtube separately to the rest of the portfolio. I could be misinformed though.

  • Like legit, some of these comments are utterly deranged. YouTube has ZERO competition in the mass market consumer space, everyone else is a niche player, and it's debatable whether YouTube even turns a profit despite that.

  • I don't think broad brushstrokes are helpful here - regular people can be real assholes, and we need to balance a public servant's individual right to privacy with the public's right to transparency.

Some jobs such as Police Officers, I have no qualms with filming while they're in uniform or otherwise on-the-job. But I can also see how a blanket approval could backfire, e.g. some aggrieved person decides to stalk some poor guy who's only job is to center divs on some government website, just because they find out he's a government worker.

  • Yeah I do understand the reasoning and honestly can't fault them for it - they are a for-profit company after all.

Doesn't mean that it's not a good example of them throwing their weight around (which is admittedly rare).

  • I had this exact fight with my team several months ago, and lost to popular opinion since the rest of my team are either zoomers or indifferent.
