Appreciate that perspective. I also can't wait to kick Adobe to the curb someday, but I usually have the same experience when trying alternatives.

Adobe stuff is slowly falling apart though it feels like. It's coasting on the brilliant work of the original devs pre-creative cloud, and while there have been a few genuinely good features added over the years, I hate to say that most new features they add feel like amateur hour to me. They just lack the level of polish and attention to detail that old features had. It doesn't feel like the people making it understand the workflow of a professional anymore. They're also just getting slow. Whenever I open Affinity I'm struck by how much more performant it feels!

I've been curious about Corel for a while, so I may need to bite the bullet and get it sometime.

Illustrator is absolutely a byzantine mess lmao. The reason it's so favored (I don't want to say loved, but favored) is because of the depth of features, and also how fast it is to work in once you've learned it's bizarre interface.

Some of it is definitely unfamiliarity, but I always find when using Affinity that things that are a single click or a hotkey + click in illustrator are multiple clicks without a hotkey in affinity. In isolation not a huge difference, but when you do it full time it adds up.

I did a salt marsh campaign that I themed like Louisiana bayou country. I had a whole society of reclusive swamp gnomes with Cajun French accents. I still miss those guys. They were cool and spooky.

I'm a pro graphic designer, so you can be as technical as you like.

I've been messing around with Affinity Designer a bit lately, and while it's gotten a lot better over the years (and some features have surpassed Adobe), the little things and workflow stuff is still such a step down I find it hard to want to use it still.

Covers are actually a very useful tool to judge things by. It's kind of the whole reason they exist.

I like my cat but I already see more of his butt than I'd like to, so I don't get this obsession either.

Wasn't there an article on here just the other day saying it had been sold to someone else? Glad to hear they're indie either way. We need more of that in all forms of journalism these days.

Reading these responses is so sad. I can see that a large number of people on here have fully embraced cynicism and active pessimism. This is the most damaging attitude possible when trying to create change. If you have this mindset, you're not only not helping to make positive change, you're actively working to drain any energy from those who might be in a better and more productive place than you.

To the OP, don't give up hope. There are thousands of people around the country working right now to change things and resist the downfall of our country in whatever ways they can. The number is growing every day with each new outrage and attack, and energy is building quickly. If you can't donate your time, donate your money to progressive organizations (look up the 50501 project for help finding them).

Nothing is going to change with blind optimism, but history is on our side, and it shows that when things start to hurt for people in their day to day lives, real change is possible. This is not the first fascist takeover in history, and it won't be the last. Some older folks have literally lived through similar times in our own country (see: McCarthyism for example). Nothing is inevitable and no one can predict the future, no matter how believable their claims may sound.

To the cynics, you're absolutely allowed to feel how you feel. I feel quite cynical myself a lot of the time, too. Just remember that when you mock and shout down people trying to move forward, you help create the future you're so resigned to. Not all of us are so ready to roll over and take it. If you won't help, please at least get out of the way.

This 100%. I barely joined here because of how confusing it was. Having to pick a community is a big turn off if you just want to try something casually.

As much as I'd love to see mastodon grow, I feel like a lot of people here like to ignore the number one most important feature of a social network: who's on it.

I don't have a personal account but I live in near a tourist destination not far from the border and there were still plenty of BC license plates around this year (though a big drop compared to last year, and I don't blame them). In other words a lot of people are still making it through apparently.

This! These things are a big pet peeve for me. Such a waste.
