  • Ditto. Ive met countless older people now who kept up doing the work they were passionate about, even if it in time became a hobby that they did at a loss. People like to work. They like to see the fruits of their labor take shape before their eyes, and they like feeling like theyre doing something that benefits someone other than themselves.

As it stands, the rules we live by only reward the infinite pursuit of profit, but that doesnt align with the values people find themselves holding whether they like it or not.

  • Whos being smug here? Youve boiled down everything i said to absolute nothing, all while ignoring the central thesis that aimless bitching about it solves nothing, and that if ur going to do something about it, then u might as well ensure that the maximum amount of people are capable of living bearable lives under the current regime. Youve also completely ignored my call for unity across the left leaning spectrum. You do all this not because im "smug," but bc, in this instance, u are a bad faith actor looking to be contentious.

Eta: and calling the problem consumerism is merely blaming the victims.

  • sigh being capable of wielding that much power is not supposed to happen is the point. Donnie dipshits potential to do so is enabled by the same problems that americans have been avoiding facing for years. The answer is not opening the door for the next in line to radically reshape everything they dont like, thats beyond inefficient. Instead, lets avoid opening up such a possibility that is only available to dump bc he wields a cult of personality made up of dinosaurs.

If u would like to pursue direct action rather than wait on electoral politics to change ur life, then i think u will find those are much more easily pursued in Biden's America v. Trumps. Enough so that taking the small amount of time itd take to vote for Status Quo Joe is worth it. Similarly, your local down ballot choices are also worth checking off based on who is best or least shit. We can effect greater change long term when ur local electoral politics are, for example, funding ur local schools sufficiently.

  • Excellent points, truly.

Esp on congressional v presidential power/responsibility. I must admit im rather guilty of this, too. Its easy to hate on our cultures authoritarian tendencies that prevade in the stupidest fucking places, and yet i still consistently think, "wheres that marjuana legislation, Joe? Why arent you passing executive orders to prevent the intellectually challeneged baboon heading Texas from busing his responsibilities to my state? Or at least offer more executive support in handling the influx of ppl? Maybe something to give out more work visas, no?

Reading this tho reminds me, most all of that is legislative tasks. weve just all been brainwashed by years of executive encroachment to where the broken parts of our system behave extra broken.

Keep fighting the good fight. Your words hit hard.

  • I keep saying this, if u had a president Sanders, i guarantee u 70+ senators would be tripping over themselves to overturn any presidential veto on the arms that Congress would then be approving.

Much like how if everyone got what they wanted and Manchin and Sinema fucked off, youd find another couple corporate democrats around to fulfill their role. In the Gaza situation, youd have Schumer telling Bernie hes an antisemite for not helping our brothers or some such shit.

There are certain policies in this country (e.x. the overinflation of our Military Industrial Complex, for one) that are too deeply ingrained. I dont understand why its easy for ppl to call out Status Quo Joe's "harsher" words against Israel as performative, but cant understand that half the Congresspeople who are feigning outrage right now are no different. The bunch in question are bought and paid for by the same interests. American sustained presence in the Mid East in a country more than friendly towards said interests is not up for debate. Especially when not selling arms to a very longterm ally that bends over backwards for the US led hegemony would erode US soft power substantially, doubly so since weve been seen as unreliable by our allies since 2016.

Unfortunately, the Palestinian people's right to exist does not outweigh that. Weve supported the Apartheid state of Israel throughout their ongoing oppression of Palestinians, why would now suddenly be different? Honestly, after a lifetime of personally bitching about Israel, hearing US leadership say anything acknowledging that whats going on is wrong has thrown me for a loop.

  • It goes beyond that. Theyre goal is chaos. By convincing the anarkiddies that theyre on to all the problems in the world and throwing in just the right amount of chinese/russian reverence, they are essentially tapping into a huge reserve of (honestly) righteous social disdain. Thats much like how bannon/milo went after the soon to be trumpies thru gamergate. A wealth of social discord waiting to be exploited.

Take note, before the api changes on reddit, leftist subs,

    1. Hardly banned anyone
    2. Did not delete comments
    3. Embraced all leftist positions as open to debate
    4. Largely rejected the (at the time) few anti-voting posts.
    5. Encouraged independent thought over groupthink. This is somehow most important.

This has all changed. Since jumping ship i cant say things look that much better here, but there are genuine leftists here who do care about discourse and not all subs/instances ban u for calling things out for what they are. Nevertheless, heres what things looked like on the darkside at the time of my departure.

Since the api changes, ive been banned for not initially calling out the whole anti vote thing, but for being able to back up my arguments with critical thinking, even from subs like therightcantmeme.

I first noticed it when overnight a bunch of new leftist spaces started popping up and gaining popularity. I mainly remember ultraleft. I took a peak, and it was nothing but tankies circlejerking over not voting with some foreign propaganda thrown in for good measure. They poured all over the other subs which all spammed antivoting garbage. And shit was so vile, like just plain hateful to a very comicbook like extent. And they all ban dissenting opinions!

But the best(worst) was seeing tge, "im new, whats the ancom(or other anarchist affiliation) view on ____?" posts. There was a time when ppl like this were told, in short, to think for themselves on this sort of stuff. Not great for recruitment, but great for independent critical thinkers.

    Idk.

  • They have, in certain places, anyway. They are never alone, either. But i believe it is hyper important to have these conversations in the open. It is important to be aware of who is influencing people towards what ends as well, of course, but we must also be ready to call them out in the commons here along with the methods they use. Theyre much craftier than they were in 2016, presumably bc the left is that much harder to co-opt than the right.

  • Im working 40, and in recent memory went thru long stretches of 60+, and also 0, when i was privileged enough to take a bit of extra time between jobs.

In my "free" time, i work on the art my heart wont let me not make. When working 40, i can manage an extra 10 hrs (maybe) on a good week doing the shit i actually feel im supposed to do. When i worked 65, i hardly did shit some weeks, other weeks id feel proud of 3 hrs. Youd think i could then manage 60, or 50, or at least 40 when unemployed then, right?

Lol, try 25 as a stretch goal. When u actually believe in ur work and want to give problems the time they deserve and the details the attention they need, you find that you get burned out pretty damn fast. Any more and the effort slips.

Granted, im not counting breaks in that number. If i work 4 hrs one day, i might do it in some 45 minute chunks, 1 ninety minute chunk, with numerous 15 minute breaks and 1 lasting between 90-120.

I get that ymmv, but im typically extolled (read: exploited) as a very hard worker in all my jobs, and we're talking about the difference between working on the things that my soul demands versus what is typically rote, menial BS.

  • Whoa... maybe not brightest for this, but i hadn't even considered the Afghan war comparisons. Its incredible how so much fewer troops perished then, and we still look at the war as critically destabilizing the USSR.

Heres hoping for much worse of the same this time.

  • They use Poland as an example of why voting is bad but ignore Tusk being one of the loudest European voices in backing Ukraine. Sounds convenient for a different major world power tp argue against that...

Bc theyre sooo totally gonna be able to get the proles to their side to overthrow their shackles instead -_____-
