  • I actually love playing low Intelligence high Wisdom characters because of this. Wisdom dictates your Perception, but Intelligence dictates how smart you are. As a low Int high Wis barbarian, I have often noticed things way before the rest of the party. And if I’m trying to role play that (especially if my Charisma is low,) I may not be able to eloquently explain what I have noticed. So it leads to a lot of “I get tired of listening to the party ramble about what we should do next, and smash my way through the hidden door cuz that seems like the obvious next thing to explore” moments.

There’s nothing quite like the party wizard initially being horrified that you took your axe to a random bookcase, only to be pleasantly surprised afterwards when he notices the passage behind the splinters and wreckage.

  • That said, even with -1 I regularly get through conversations because my DM rewards good roleplaying by not making us roll for everything.

And that’s something to be applauded. Many tables seem to forget that checks are called by the DM, not the player. There’s a huge difference between role play and roll play. Lots of players will try to take the Observant perk, min-max their Perception, walk into a room, and immediately go “I want to make a Perception check!”

Okay… What specifically are you looking at with that check? Because if the answer is just “I look around the room” then that doesn’t require a check; That’s just using your passive Perception, and if you had waited just a moment I was going to describe the room to you anyways.

If you want to look under the bed, I may call for a check to see if you notice the trap door under the rug, while you’re on the ground looking under the bed. Or if you want to search the wardrobe, I may call for a check to see if you notice the false back with a hidden compartment. But if you just want to glance around the room, my only description is going to be the obvious things that you notice around the room with your passive Perception. I won’t mention the slightly askew candelabrum (it’s a lever for a hidden door), the scratch marks on the floor (where the door rubs it when it opens), or the slight draft from the seam around the door unless your passive Perception is high enough, or you’re specifically looking at something near one of those things where you would be able to notice it.

I used Perception as an example, but many players try to do the same with Charisma skills like Deception or Persuasion. Sure, there may be times where you’ll need to lie to some NPC. But don’t just say you want to make a Deception check. Lie to me (as the NPC) and if the NPC’s passive Insight is high enough (or the lie is bold enough) I’ll call for a Deception check. But if it’s a small lie that would be reasonably believed, I usually won’t even bother calling for a check, because you as the player made it believable. Same with Persuasion or Intimidation. If you as the player drop some sort of stone cold line to intimidate a character, I likely won’t even bother calling for an Intimidation roll. Or if I do, (maybe it’s an intimidating line, but the NPC isn’t easily intimidated), I’ll be sure to at least give the player advantage.

I have also done things like allowing a barbarian to add their strength modifier to an Intimidation check, because they were trying to use their strength to intimidate. Intimidation is classed as a Charisma skill (which Barbarians usually dump) but sometimes it makes sense for people to be intimidated by things other than words. If a barbarian single-handedly takes out six goblins in one turn, I may have that barbarian roll Intimidation against the rest of the group to see if any turn and flee after seeing it happen. Because I want to be sure to reward good role play, not just leave players at the mercy of RNGesus.

  • and the rest of us just smiled and nodded politely while nervously eyeing the gigantic stick America was waving around.

America was only ever the “leader” of the free world because no other country wanted to bother with going up against their military. They have bases all over the world. Politely nodding was considered a small price to pay for not being targeted by them.

But this current administration has proved that politely nodding won’t keep a target off of your back. So now, countries have started rethinking their attitudes towards those American military bases.

  • I have tried both, and can confirm that sous vide is superior. With a traditional oven prep, you get a pink rare center and brown medium-well outer edge. With sous vide, you get a perfect light pink medium rare all the way through, with only a thin edge of brown from the sear. With sous vide, you just sort of roll it across the skillet on the way to the plate, to get that crust but avoid cooking the interior more.

But to be clear, if you skip the sear with sous vide, your steak will be pink. You’ll miss out on a lot of flavor and mouthfeel from the sear. Sous vide technically cooks the meat, but doesn’t cause any browning (at least, not when cooking it to medium rare) because there isn’t enough heat to cause the Maillard reaction.

  • It’s also how flat earthers started. 4chan started satirically memeing about flat earth. Then idiots saw it, missed the satire, and picked it up as a serious thing. At that point, 4chan went “this is funnier than any satire we could make” and stood back to watch the crazies launch rockets into the upper atmosphere.

  • The funny part is that there’s very little reason to actually buy a barrel of lube. In porn, they just mix their own lube using distilled water (available cheaply from virtually any grocery or hardware store) and a dissolvable powder. There’s not a good reason to ship wet lube in bulk, because freight shipping is calculated by weight and you’re essentially just paying to ship water. The added benefit is that the porn makers can mix the lube to be a thinner or thicker consistency, depending on their specific needs.

For the curious, look up J-lube, X-lube, K-lube, or Fist Lubricant Powder. And yes, all of the above are available for purchase on Amazon.

And to drive the point home that you’re just paying for freight shipping… J-lube powder is currently $26.77 for 10oz, which makes 10 liters of lube when mixed per the manufacturer’s recommended dosage. So $26.77 for 10 liters, plus probably $3 for the distilled water you need to mix it with. Let’s round up to an even $30 in total. The barrel is currently $1775.32 for 7080fl.oz, or ~209.4 liters. So the barrel is ~$8.47 per liter, while the dry powder mix is ~$3.00 per liter. The barrel is almost 3x as much per liter as the dry powder.

  • Where I live, everyone used AOL Instant Messenger, or AIM for short. It was popular with teens because it offered chat rooms, but that meant it was also a popular hunting ground for predators. Nearly every terminally online teen from the late 90’s and early 2000’s has a story about getting groomed on AIM, by someone they initially thought was their own age.

Then Google Chat and Facebook Messenger came along, (and AOL’s subscriber count began to dwindle as people moved to broadband internet) and it was almost completely dead by 2010.

  • I hear sous vide steak can be quite tasty.

It is the best way to prepare steak, but you still need to sear it afterwards. The steak can be cooked to a perfect medium-rare all the way through… But you still need to throw it on an ultra hot skillet with some butter and rosemary afterwards, to add the crust to the outside.

  • Yeah, the issue is that if you don’t run ads, Twitch will just put their own in before your stream starts. And this absolutely kills any sort of discoverability for your channel; If new viewers have to watch 90 seconds of ads before they can even see your stream, they’ll just bail.

So for the sake of growing your channel, it’s actually better to run ads. Because then your viewers aren’t immediately blasted by a ton of unskippable ads as soon as they start your stream.

  • Yeah, Trump already started packing the military leadership with loyalists. His goal is to install a bunch of people who won’t tell him “no” when he orders them to do a bunch of blatantly unconstitutional bullshit. Soldiers are supposed to refuse illegal orders, which is why he’s trying to get loyalists installed instead.

  • Drag racing is a form of race where competitors line up at a starting line and compete to be the first across the finish line. It’s unique in that most races begin with the cars already moving, and typically involve longer races, multiple laps, cornering, etc… In contrast, drag racing is on a straight quarter mile track, which means it is a competition focused almost entirely on acceleration and top speed.

To make a track and field comparison, drag racing is like the 100 meter sprint of car races. No measure of endurance, just get from A to B as fast as possible.

Even if you don’t recognize the name for drag racing, you almost certainly recognize the distinctive car design with the large rear tires, long pointed nose, and giant aerofoils to keep the car on the track:

Virtually every professional drag race is over in just a few seconds.

  • It’s a drag racing reference. Drag strips are traditionally a quarter mile long, and there are over 50 supercars that have made it in less than 10 seconds. Considering the fact that the Fast and the Furious series is all about racing and cars, it’s clearly a drag racing reference.

One of the big issues with localization is that it tends to destroy references like this. If you change the distance into another unit (like kilometers) you also destroy the drag racing reference.
