  • Also, beware the rabbit hole of custom bindings.

But, also, how did I go an entire year without finding out about radial pop-up touch menus on the touchpads? HFS, I'll never get to play a game again for all the time I could spend messing with those.

  • Why would you give them access? Maybe android sucks, but iOS sandboxes apps. And on desktop you just pull up a firefox private session. It’s not that hard.

  • Assuming you have a phone which skies allows you to deny permissions on an app-level, what is preventing you from browsing it? Is it political? Job related (ie your only device is a work device)?

While you can easily let it feed you crap, you have a reasonable ability to tune what the algo feeds you. Unless you really do have a self control issue, which is legit/fair reading to avoid the temptation.

  • Knowing what kind of prints you want to make informs the purchasing decision. I'm with @Hazdaz@lemmy.world - we would want to know what kind of stuff OP wants to print to make the best recommendation. They may not have articulated the concern well, focusing on the impracticality of most SLA parts for mechanical components, but the question to OP stands: what do they want to print? The fineness of feature and speed of printing, the volume - or even single or dual axis size - of parts.

OP - from reading your list of printers, if you just want to "try it out" as you did with cheap FDM, grab a Anycubic Mono 4K to start (currently $160US with a coupon). It will only print small items, but will print them with excellent detail and reasonable speed. Spend a few extra on the magnetic build plate, I find it invaluable to have two spring-steel build plates that lets me swap a blank plate onto the printer while my current print and plate is getting washed/cleaned up.

The wash station is almost useless (or at least I find it quicker to wash by hand/soft brush in small tubs) but a cure station is convenient if you don't want to wait for daylight to cure your prints. If you want to see if resin is viable for you, skip the station and save the money to begin with.

There are some "tough" and "ABS-like" resins which are quite a bit less fragile/brittle than the basic stuff, but I'd still be wary of using them in parts that get lots of UV exposure over time. I've only tried a couple: OPTO ABS-Like seems to have good fracture toughness but it's super difficult to get it to a final cure state. It sands very easily, though. Anycubic Tough resin is, as it's name implies, better fracture toughness, but I've only done a couple of prints and can't speak to the long term.

For game pieces and miniatures, resin is amazing compared to FDM. I printed a Niffler (HP/Fantastic Beasts) in FDM and still haven't gotten around to cleaning up all the support flash. The SLA/resin version I printed was smaller due to my printer size, but required near zero cleanup despite all the crazy fur overhangs, and I got it painted in a weekend.

  • From a user interaction POV, just have a couple of accounts. I started out on a small server, got a .world and kbin account, then got a beehaw account. If a server is down, I just switch instances.

From a community standpoint, it's terrible because the instance hosts the only live version of the communities. IMHO communities shouldn't be instance specific. Every (federated) instance should have a two-way aggregation of identically named communities. That has some (minor) drawbacks, but is much better for new users to understand and is much more resilient to individual instance failures and outages. (/rant.off)

  • You'd be surprised how little additional isolation you get compared to a good set of well-fitting comply tips. I carry a "backup" set of Westone UM3X earbuds on travel and have swapped them in vs my Airpod Pro 2 buds and felt that the effect was nominally equivalent. The AP2s are more comfortable to wear for very long flights, though.

A couple of caveats - first, I "feel" the ANC when it gets out of sync and find that very disconcerting, so I'm pretty careful with the fit and positions of my AP2s. Second, I have tinnitus which is mostly in the C7/E7 range so I have not experienced "true" silence in over a decade. Also, I'm over 50 and my perceptual limit in isolation is down around 11-12kHz, but ANC is pretty poor that high, esp compared to simple isolation.

  • If ever.

  • Nah, I don’t care. I don’t wear a gold star to basketball when I sweep the court, bring the pennies, or we use my ball - it’s part of being able to play.

Could I stand up my own instance? Yes. Do I want that headache? Fuck no. I’ll chip in any time my instances think they’ll need the cash. It’s what a community does.

Oh and, for the record, Fuck Spez. I’m never giving that money grubbing whore a single cent.

  • As inconvenient as it is, there are always resources in other places -, whether for the steam deck or any other niche. Hopefully they will join the indefinite blackout. I dropped by the main Reddit site to see how things were going after 48 hours and a good number of subs I see on the FP are coming in as indefinite/until the policy changes.
