  • Google is not interested in a larger screen size so that more ads that otherwise wouldn't have been scrolled to can count as an impression. Given 95% of apps are scroll based anyways, you would get what - a couple percent more impressions on ads the user wouldn't have scrolled past before closing their phone?

No, this is not the main reason, especially when you consider every major phone brand on the market is going this way.

It's obviously a case of "consumers see big and click buy" (see: cars) and "big phone means more battery life and better specs we can market".

  • I don't think phone makers are that close to ad companies.

It's most likely the same thing as a truck- people say they don't want this insecurity driven monstrosity, but test after test, people buy the bigger one.

Edit: I mis-wrote that, my implication was that the people deciding the phone size spec are going to be doing it off hard data like what customers like to buy and what extra hardware they can fit in. I know Google owns Pixel, but the data point surrounding more ad impressions is extremely weak compared to literally any other data point regarding consumer choices

  • Come work at Meta, we have Fedora Linux laptops :)

Edit: Maybe we should crowd source a list of companies that let you use Linux. I've worked at startups and straight up told the CEO "I'm installing Linux" and that has worked, but corporate companies you can't get away with that

  • I'm the opposite of an insomniac - I'm a rabid sleeper and love sleep. I usually hit 9 hours a day, sometimes more.

Here's what works for me - most obviously won't work for you, but give some another try if you haven't done them yet -

    • Clean your bedsheets every couple days. Clean sheets = 😍
    • Wash your hair well and shower right before getting into bed. No smell = 🥰
    • Use white noise. You'll never get perfect silence, so drown out noise instead
    • Turn off every single LED and light in your room. Don't have a single light source visible while you're in bed.
    • Get an eye mask - a high quality one - if you can't do the above.
    • Do the workout of your lifetime - Do an all-day hike or something. You can clock out from physical exhaustion
    • Get in and out of bed at the same time every day. Start with less sleep time than you need. Force your body to recognize "I only rest in this bed"
    • Conversely, don't do anything in your bed besides sleep. Especially don't use your phone with the nasty blue light
  • Doing great, working hard at work and saving as much as I can. Helping my girlfriend come to the US for a year or two so we can pad the savings further and GTFO. Big plans for starting a business later on so we can get a bigger slice of the pie, and exercising/gaming for downtime.

Even if I don't like it here, I've worked out a good future plan filled with contingencies. Very lucky to have my opportunities, not gonna squander them 🙏

  • The conservative party in the UK also increased immigration rates, while kicking and screaming about illegal immigrants. They know it's best to exploit immigrants for wealth, but need to do the dance for their supporters

  • The crazy thing to me is that people devoted thousands of hours to film some of these beautiful, low budget documentaries and films and just... After so much commitment, not even the company you sold the copyright to cares anymore. If not for these beautiful seeders, I wouldn't have ever seen their work.
