  • PieFed is like Lemmy in the same way that Lemmy is like Reddit.

One thing I absolutely adore about PieFed is the focus on democratization of moderation: by putting the power to choose your own experience into the hands of the users, you reduce the burden of moderation, e.g. the reason that Lemm.ee is shutting down. For example a new user account that joined less than two weeks ago gets an icon next to the username, and accounts that post 10x more often than comment (unregistered bot?), and people who receive 10x more downvotes than upvotes (troll?), so at a glance you can get more of a feel what you are up against before or as you reply to someone.

I dislike how Lemmy is somehow more authoritian than Reddit itself: yes there is a modlog but no modmail, no notification sent about a moderation event, no ability to ask questions why, nor even acknowledgment as to which mod did the action so that you can tag them (without having to put the full list of mods) elsewhere. Moreover, I do not expect this to ever change, not in five years nor ten, and in fact this aspect of Lemmy has actually gotten worse over time - Lemmy after all was founded by the tankies who were kicked off of Reddit for being too toxic, then decided to make their own Reddit, with blackjack and hookers:-). Which they did, and kudos, and it's absolutely great to see... but tankies are well known for their authoritarianism, see e.g. admin practices on Lemmy.ml.

PieFed is already doing things that Reddit had not. The goal of Reddit was to increase shareholder profits, not improve end user experience. PieFed is the second non-tankie implementation of a true Reddit alternative, after Kbin/Mbin, but PieFed is under very active development and in many ways has already surpassed Lemmy. See it for yourself - e.g. every cross-post has all the comments combined across all of the cross-postings, and the categories of communities (user customizable and shareable btw) are adorable.

  • That's what I told your mom... last night.

I mean, let us publish these results in a journal of some scientific repute.

  • And also when you don't look away too, except it's somehow even more awesome watching it build itself real-time:-).

  • PieFed is awesome šŸ˜Ž

There are several instances to choose from, though app support is still rolling out and for awhile may be hit or miss.

  • For a brief time they had been moved to a sub menu, but it was annoying and so they were shuffled around again.

PieFed.social is the "bleeding edge" where all the newest experimental stuff is tried out, but the other instances are more stable e.g. https://feddit.online/ .

  • Droids? No, these are not the ones you are looking for, move along.

  • PieFed is written in Python, and so has already managed to surpass Lemmy in available features (by a lot, and new ones continue to be added practically weekly), despite Lemmy having an enormous head start. Lemmy is written in Rust and even high experienced and capable C++ developers do not know how to work with it, plus the language itself is not finished.

Tbh, there are still some things that Lemmy does better, like having a post + comment preview, and Lemmy has a really excellent search feature (though you don't even need an account to use that...). However, PieFed will continue to run laps around Lemmy for the foreseeable future, as feature requests languish for literally many years (not joking here) in Lemmy, but people are willing (and capable) to volunteer and they show up in PieFed quickly.

The best way to learn about PieFed, as you already saw, is just to go check it out, but be prepared to fall in love instantly, bc those features are truly amazing! šŸ˜šŸ¤©

    Edit: e.g. https://piefed.social/ .

  • It defederated from Hexbear at least, so yes. I absolutely love that instance - I whole-heartedly recommend the admin team there, but if someone is looking for federation with instances such as that one, that is not what it is about.

It is a fantastic recommendation to make to someone coming in from Reddit.

  • It reminds me of DMV.social's shutdown, and for similar reasons (admin feeling overwhelmed). I don't recall how big that one was though.

  • Thunder is coming, but for now only Interstellar is official iirc (last I saw Thunder support was only available as a fork of the code).

The web interface is great though.

  • Although defederations are an issue. Sopuli for instance blocks both Hexbear.net and lemmygrad.ml - which imho is very much a good thing.:-)

  • Discuss.Online has fantastic admins. The uptime rate there is breathtaking. I hopped across many instances before I settled there.

PieFed is also pretty fantastic too, with so very many features that Lemmy lacks - like flairs (post and user), voting polls, categories of communities, which are user customizable and shareable, etc.

  • I disagree. Some of its top recommendations include lemmynsfw.com (I have nothing against NSFW but go there and read their admin posts - they have been struggling for a long time so like lemm.ee not stable), beehaw.org (a fantastic instance but I feel like one not to be casually recommended to people without explanation), hilariouschaos.com (are you fucking kidding me with this neonazi shit?), lemmy.ml (certainly nothing ever controversial can be said about that one - at least not while on that platform!šŸ˜œšŸ˜ž), and all of this is just what I noticed today but in the past iirc multiple times even it has suggested hexbear.net to me.

So no, I don't recommend the recommendation of this site to people.

  • We could do that now regardless tho?

  • At the cost of manual curation, meaning the largest instances such as Lemmy.World had to be defederated. So... they choose quality (niceness) over quantity. And it works:-).

  • The absolutely do... look so very tasty...

  • Literally that is true by law :-)
