NYT: Trump Unstoppable, Opposition Futile

  • Yeah, it's quite gross. This is really something that should be part of the school budget.

  • You’re right, I tend to lurk and up vote when I feel it’s appropriate. I’ll try to do better at making my voice heard if you want to have more contributions and build an actual community.

I actually did notice that you posted a comment in another thread here and it was relevant and on topic. It was a nice comment and I hope to see more of that going forward and less of this type of comment thread, please.

But based on the discussion under the article about sex ed, it’s mostly just more of the same discussion I would find anywhere else on beehaw

I don't have a problem with that. Beehaw was selected as a migration point for our subreddit because of its ethos and the fact that its rules would attract a larger than average leftist population. I would expect the type of viewpoints that you would typically find in a socialist community to be fairly prevalent on such a site. Making the beehive too focused would make it annoying to find content, so I don't mind having a wider net. Another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the people subscribed here may not necessarily be subscribed to a lot of other Beehaw communities, as we are on a federated platform, so those types of comments may not be as common for them as it is for us.

  • Well, to be blunt you're not a contributor at all. Your only posts here are complaining in this thread about the content.

“Biden Couldn’t Care Less About Human Rights” (not really related to socialism, just another “Politician sucks” article, but sure, he’s doing it because capitalism, so just barely getting over the hurdle), and “Why are people frightened that kids will learn abouy sex?” (Absolutely not related to socialism, just a social issue),

This is funny. Current Affairs is a Libertarian Socialist magazine that posts articles written by authors who are various flavors of the anti-capitalist left written from their relevant perspective on a wide variety of issues. Socialist critique of elected officials is absolutely relevant to a socialist community, as is a socialist view on sex ed and nudity; I really don't know what to say to someone who doesn't understand that.

If the posts were spread out in time

They are posted at times and in a format that are convenient for me, because that's how individuals submitting content works. I just happen to like to post in a batch. 🤷

“I made it and I’m in charge, no other opinions welcome” really is the weakest of arguments.

It's not really an argument. It's mostly me informing you upfront that your complaint is not going to result in the change you want to see, so you should either get over it, or unsub from/block the beehive if you are not interested in seeing that; it would be a much better use of your time than whatever this is.

  • Sorry bud, but as the founder of this community and primary content submitter, I'm gonna go ahead and say that this kind of news absolutely does belong here, as it is relevant to keep track of the opposition's floundering. If you don't like that, then I suggest you find a different community.

  • I know it's not what you want to hear, but you should really learn JS first and then go through the handbook you linked to learn TS. As you've noticed, the majority of the resources for TypeScript will assume that you're already proficient with JS and you'll have an easier time with the ecosystem if you take that approach.

  • You don't see why a political opponent of the left shitting the bed on handling a natural disaster would be of interest to socialists?

  • Two of the big objectives of American socialism is going to be implementing a universal healthcare system and improving the working conditions of those employed in it, so it's important for socialists to keep track of the current problems with these things since we're going to have to be the ones cleaning it up.

  • Could also have a type of penicillin that we inject to clear the plastic out of our blood if we go that route.

  • Ideally into something that doesn't poison us, something that we could either safely absorb, or expel from our bodies all together.

  • We're gonna be needing a probiotic that breaks down plastic in the future.

    1. Mozilla's goals for the web line up quite nicely with my own.
    2. The performance is good for what I want.
    3. The extension API is more powerful than Chrome's.
    4. Outside of the Apple ecosystem, it's the last major alternative to the Chrome skins.
    5. It isn't actively trying to cripple adblockers.
  • I use one called Dark Mode. Before that I used one called Dark Background and Light Text, but it kept flashing white on pages while they were loading so I quit using it (this was years ago and IDK if this has since been fixed).

  • I had a feeling this was going to happen when I saw that there were authors namedropping libgen while going after the AI people. Might wanna get all your last minute downloads out of the way now before the service gets disrupted.

  • I prefer strong static typing for the most part. I find it difficult to mentally model code when it's not clear what exactly is being passed to functions and whatnot. Can also use them to help ensure code correctness. TypeScript has been a welcome addition to my projects over the years and honestly I want them to implement more functionality like pattern matching expressions.

  • Back when Chrome was the new kid on the block and people were switching to it from Firefox, Chrome gapped Firefox super hard performance-wise pre-Quantum/e10s. Firefox was still a single-threaded browser that would lock up if a tab had particularly nasty JS. The extensions also broke all the time because while XUL extensions could do anything, even tie into the actual browser frame, that was a maintenance nightmare that made it difficult to change anything and even harder to parallelize.

In the post-Quantum era here in 2023, you're definitely right that there's no real reason to switch from Firefox to Chrome. The practical performance gap has been closed, the extension system has stabilized and offers more functionality than Chrome's implementation, it's not actively trying to sabotage adblockers and anti-tracking measures, and is just all around better about privacy. It's time to call the powerusers and techies home.

  • Here's a cheap Sandisk one and here's a cheap Sony one. I'd probably just install foobar2000 on your phone though. They also sell USB CD drives that you can pick up for cheap. I'm sure there's plenty of Android apps that can rip CDs.

  • Half of the videos they recommend to me are things I've already watched. Sometimes there'll just be blank slots like they couldn't find any content to recommend. It's so shit now.

  • Yeah, I've also been returning somewhat to how I used the internet before modern social media (and it has been nicer).

  • I've always liked the FOSS approach to sharing. There was a window manager I wanted, but really wished it had a particular feature that had been rejected by the original developers. With copyright-restricted proprietary software, I'd be shit-outta-luck. But fortunately it had a FOSS license and released the source code. Someone had taken that code and added the feature I wanted in their own version of the software so people like me could use that one instead. Eventually after awhile, the feature even got merged into upstream, which probably wouldn't have happened without other developers showing how things could be better. The ability to share and collaborate work is very valuable for humanity, even if you're not the one doing the work yourself. I think proprietary software is a good day-to-day example of intellectual property getting in the way of innovation, especially with the recent actions of major tech companies designed to cripple and destroy the 3rd party ecosystems that have set up around their products.
