Cords

Jump
  • I did this.
Is it stupid? Yes. Did it work? Also yes. For the amount of time that we'd have power out, it was just way to easy to throw a breaker and connect it like this just to keep a small heater and a light running. If I had the money at the time I would have loved battery backup/ bypass but this cost $2 and an old cord.

  • I wanted to drive trains for a long time. I love big machines and I love trains, so when I got a gig as a conductor I was excited. I excelled in the training and devoured everything I could in the CROR and the movements of equipment.

When I hit the yard, there were lost time accidents every day, multiple derailments, and when coming into work one day I was late because an engine hit a 52' trailer and flipped it into another engine at a crossing in the yard, in front of the train masters office.

My shifts were 4-12 hours long, but often I'd have to get a taxi across town after a shift to get my car then drive home and go to sleep, only to get woken up by a phone call giving me two hours notice for my next shift. That shit was bananas.

It was explained to me early on that the work lists that we were given weren't physically possible to do in a safe/perscribed manner. Like, they don't actually give you time to move the train forward, stop it, flip a switch, move back and decouple, so often conductors would call out multiple movements and hustle behind the train to get everything done without stopping. Which lead to some dude getting his legs cut off.

I didn't do that for very long. I loved working on the trains, and I was very good at it, but I quit without another job lined up before qualifying since I didn't want to feel trapped working for cn.

  • Oh my sweet summer child. The van was brand new at the time.

The whole world used to smell like cigarettes. When the server at a restaurant asked if you wanted smoking or non smoking section, they used to be right next to each other.

  • My mom had a red 1991, and I puked in it a ton. I remember her yelling at me "I opened the window, all the smoke is going out the window what are you complaining about?". Long smokey drives that made me so car sick.

Just seeing one gives me the queezies.

  • My printer can print, but most of the other features are locked behind Brothers drivers. Copying/ scanning from the document feeder and duplex were kind of a pain to get working, and for some reason only work from certain programs.

  • It's just bad faith reporting. It reminds me of Kotaku sneaking into conventions before they opened to report what games were there.

It lowers my opinion of The Verge, I used to think they were at least reputable with standards, but that's a real tabloid move.

  • I'm doing a CIS degree right now, and I did 99% of my first year on fedora. I did need a full windows install because some exams took place using a lock down software.

Honestly, the hardest part was remembering to boot into windows the day before so it could update and stabilize for the exam the next day

  • If I had unlimited space and could set up one of those retro game rooms, I'd love to use my old systems. However, it's way easier and practical for me to keep my collection in boxes/shelves and have a little pc hooked up to the TV that's actually made to output hdmi.

  • My hope for the future relies on a study indicating that after 5 or so generations of training data tainted with AI generated information, the LLM models collapsed.

Hopefully, after enough LLMs have been fed LLM data, we will arrive in an LLM-free future.

<this is unlikely to come true but let me hope >
