  • The Emperor's New Groove is, IMHO, the funniest film Disney has ever made. Most of the films from the Disney revival era are basically musicals with comic relief, but TENG is pure Looney Tunes. It has a great cast and it's laugh-out-loud funny from beginning to end.

  • Every conservative accusation is a confession.

  • There are more than enough people on the planet and the answer to falling birth rates in the developed world isn’t more births, it’s more immigration.

Unfortunately, the xenophobes seem to be winning in most western countries, to everyone’s detriment.

  • I've used Lemmy Account Settings Instance Migrator, which migrates your blocked communities and settings as well as your subscriptions. It worked for me, but YMMV as the developer says it's alpha software.

  • Agreed. I'm old enough to remember when you could have a rational debate with conservatives on a foreign policy question or government budget priorities or economic policy. But how do you argue with someone who believes that millions of illegal votes were cast in 2020 or that Jews secretly control the world financial system or that white people are the real victims of racism?

You can't argue with someone who lives in a different reality than you do because there are no common points of reference. It's the most insidious effect of over-exposure to conservative media and I have no idea how people can be deprogrammed.

  • In addition to a large instance being less likely to shut down and (presumably) having more resources, there's an additional advantage to being on a larger instance: you have a more comprehensive "All" feed. Since federation with a remote feed isn't established until (IIRC) someone subscribes to it, an instance with a larger user base should contain more subscriptions to a wider variety of content. Of course, not everyone will like that and you lose out on Beehaw content if you're on the two largest Lemmy instances, but I think it applies in general.

  • Darn it, beat me to it :-).

  • Eastern Sierra Regional Airport in Bishop, California. Currently served by United Airlines CRJ's.

  • Most WWII fighters were basically large engines with the smallest possible airframe fit around them. The only armaments typically carried were guns, so they were light, fast and nimble.

  • I've always used Xubuntu. It's reasonably lightweight and the Ubuntu USB creator does the heavy lifting for creating persistence. The only downside is you have to have a running instance an Ubuntu flavor (bare metal, VM or USB) to use the tool.

  • Aside from the social issues mentioned by Jim, if you're looking to move somewhere on the I-5 corridor be aware that Oregon's reputation for ceaseless rain is, in some ways, well-deserved. Fall through spring is very cloudy and rainy. It gets gloomy and if you suffer from SAD it can be hard on you. On the other hand, summers are beautiful, with mostly sunny and warm days with the occasional heat spell.

Being a fairly large state with varied terrain, there are several climate zones:

    • Summers are hotter on the I-5 corridor south of Eugene.
    • The coast is cool and cloudy year-round, and rainier than the I-5 corridor.
    • Areas east of the Cascade Mountains are much drier, with hotter summers and cold winters.
  • I would be linking to the thread. Does the cross-post button not work as expected?

  • Okay, this comment made me LOL. Well done.

  • Yes, although I'd argue that it's a pick your poison thing. You can use a system where the content of your texts aren't secure, or you can let Meta add even more personal information to the dossier it has on you, your friends and the family dog.

  • I've seen a lot of discussion about why most of the rest of the world uses messaging apps instead of texting, so I understand. And messaging applications are objectively better in almost every way. But the threat of enshittification is always present when people choose a corporate walled garden. Hopefully some of the new EU regulations on account portability will make lock-in less of a concern.
