That has nothing to do with dying from sleep deprivation. It doesn't matter what keeps you awake, you'll still die.

I don't know how common it is, so I'm not sure how normal it is. I think a lot of people live with parents who don't seem to understand how their words affect their children. My mother has never said this to me, and if she ever did, it would have crushed me. I'm sorry OP. I'm not sure what her reason was for saying that to you, but we're glad you're here and alive. I think once you pass the physical strength/endurance exam to become a cop, you don't have to take any to remain one. I definitely think that should change, though. Make them pass once a year to retain their job.
