  • Another vote for Linux Mint. Many Linux distros are available on bootable USBs, so you can try out Linux without messing with your Windows installation at all.

  • Being against genocide isn't a "political position." It's called "being a decent human being" and you should be against it, no matter who is doing it to who.

Pointing out that Trump is the dumbest, cruelest president that has ever lived isn't a "political position. " It's called "using your fucking eyes and paying attention to what he's doing."

I could go on and on about "things that are more obvious than a sunrise being labeled 'political positions'" but those 2 things could keep us busy for years.

  • The other nice thing about Linux is that there are several Live versions you can try out on your computer without making any changes to your Windows installation.

This also lets you see if check and see if Linux fully supports your hardware (just in case you have a weird network or audio card). If the Live version of Linux works, the installed version will, as well.

Most installers let you set up a dual boot on the same hard drive, too.

  • LibreOffice has LibreCalc. It's free and there's a Windows version you can try.

  • You don't need to buy a new computer. You just need to upgrade your old computer.

    To Linux.

  • I've got Wine 9, running on Linux Mint. I mostly use it for older games and a few Windows programs like IrfanView. All my modern games I bought on Steam, run great under Linux. (Steam has a native Linux client and uses it's own Windows compatability layer called Proton to run games).

I use LibreOffice for productivity, Thunderbird for email and GIMP has a native Linux client, too.

  • Nothing wrong with pointing out when someone is being an idiot. They can go on being an idiot, but at least the truth is out in the open, where it needs to be.

  • If you work hard, you get nothing but more work.

  • Cut both apples into 10 slices each. And then, the richest person takes 18 slices. Because that's how capitalism works, baby.

  • When your support for a country is so blind and unconditional that you can support genocide.

  • Thanks, Microsoft, you spineless simps. Another reason I'm glad I switched to Linux.

  • You can't make long term plans for building factories, sourcing raw materials and hiring people if the Dynamite Monkey in Chief can blow it all up on a whim.

  • Microsoft should be getting worried about Linux.

  • I have 3-4 older games, like Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Deus Ex that I run separately under Wine, using the default settings.

  • One of the ways to avoid a copyright strike is if you copy other people's work, then what you upload must be "transformative" i.e. you have alter that source content significantly. Satire / Parody are two ways to do that.

But the cheapest, laziest way to "transform" content is to do reaction videos to it. And some people don't even do that. They'll just sit there, eating their dinner . . . occasionally glancing at the screen and going, "huh." Lazy jerks.

  • Agree on Mint. The Nvidia drivers installed automatically for me. They're 4-5 months old, but they're stable.

  • The Democrats suck but there's a huge difference between voting for boring corporatists and 100% concentrated evil. Don't make me tap the chart.

  • Your "friend" is an idiot. You should not share anything personal with her. This situation is NOT normal. Take a deep breath. Sit down and write out what's going on between you and your dad. See if your state has a CPS website and find out what the process is for reporting abuse (and find out what they consider to BE abuse. I'm pretty sure deliberate starvation qualifies.).

Do you have any friends outside the home you trust and can stay with, short term? Cops aren't going to be useful, here. They're not CPS or mental health caregivers and they'll probably just take you back home to your dad.

  • Capitalism today looks nothing like capitalism in the 1950s. Back then, a family could easily survive on the income of one person. With money left over to pay for college education, a car and a house.

That is not the situation today, where most Americans have NO retirement savings. Unless you're redefining what capitalism IS, then that's a problem caused by the people in charge (oligarchs).
