  • Just want to say that I appreciate how you two ended up haha. It was a wide eyed "Woah" from me at the beginning there (both), but I do love that you guys talked it out and ended up all civil and complimentary. There's hope for us all to understand each other is my takeaway. Thanks to both of you for showing us the way.

  • I'm just curious how many Palestinians need to die, and how much of Gaza needs to be razed to dust before we're "even" in the minds of proponents that somehow this war is justified. Legitimately and in good faith, when are we "good" here?

  • They're not wrong. The Dems aren't the good guys here. As usual they're just slightly less bad. Someone that loves democracy lets a primary election happen rather annointing their chosen meat puppet....sorry, candidate.

  • Yeah, a couple of decades ago China was a miracle as western institutions repeatedly redefined the poverty threshold to make global poverty look like it was improving. Back then it was touting the power of the free market, with most of the gains being in China. Now that they want conflict with China, those numbers are no longer good enough. I'm not saying China doesn't have a poverty problem, I'm just saying this is illustrative of propaganda changing the narrative.

  • Also, if its in human poo it's already in the carbon cycle and so really less of an issue. The problem is bringing up carbon that's been removed from the cycle (subterranean oil or gas pockets) and putting that back into circulation. Granted it would be better to pull carbon out of the atmosphere (somehow), but at least using poo wouldn't be adding NEW carbon. That's my understanding anyway.

  • I wish that Obrien had handled this better rather than leaning into the macho chest-beating. He could've really made this guy look like even more of a doofus if he'd have just been like "Sorry, are you offering to fight me on the house floor right now? I'd like to speak to someone competent".

  • You're right. I'm mostly a lurker and when I do want to say something it's more often than not sarcastic and shitty. What you say hits home and really makes me regret some of my Lemmy history. I'm sorry that life is hitting you so hard, the world is such a mess now and it really is hard to stay positive. But that's what Star Trek is supposed to be about. Sorry we've let you down. That's on us. Look after yourself my fellow trekie. Take my thanks for all that you do for the community. You're a Trekkie god among lurkers. Live long and prosper 🖖

  • I mean when we watch decades of wars that kill thousands of American's and MILLIONS of people in their own countries for no reason, maybe we need a little additional justification rather than "fight for your country". Nah! Probably just the fault of the "instant gratification" generations being selfish again.

We see more, and trust less now. Seems like a good first order explanation to me anyway.

  • Whoopie doing this shit makes me more sad than other dipshit boomers. Growing up she was Guinan, a character on Star Trek TNG. She was unbelievably old and wise and gentle and kind and, honestly, had the best fucking hats. Every time she says something like this, or shat on Bernie, or whatever it is today, it drives home that it's all story telling, and makes it harder to believe in something better.

  • You're comparing linear distance to surface area of the south China sea. I'd be curious to know how close to Chinese airspace this bomber or group was flying. Fair enough though, if you think it's not analagous we could open it up to the entire gulf of Mexico/Caribbean. It seems pretty clear to me that Chinese aircraft in that area would result in a tantrum that would probably escallate beyond tailgating.
