Fuck turbo tax, that shit sucks don't use it - can't say enough bad things about it. I've used cash app to file for free for a few years now. I doubt their privacy policy is any good, but it works well and I'm not trying to fuck around with my taxes...
I'd suggest proxmox. Sinple web UI for management, but debian backend. Very powerful virtualization. Supports GPU passthrough, LVMs, ZFS, and a bunch of other stuff out of the box.
If you get another machine, you can also put them into a cluster.
Right idea, but I'd suggest getting dell or lenovo mini pcs instead. Saves you a bit of cash and you can get a semi-recent (low tdp) i5 + 8gb ram + whatever ssd the seller will throw you.

Shouldn't affect the speed it takes to retrieve records too much (a couple ms), but certain nameserver providers may update records faster in the event you change 'em.
I've used it to open a local port on my laptop publicly without needing to make any changes to the local network I was on. It can be useful for opening your laptop's ssh port or to host an http server to send someone a big file you don't want to pay to upload somewhere.
One other common use is 🏴☠️ which I suspect is why they disabled the service :/
