In high school, teachers used to insist we become computer techs and engineers cause it was the future! And teachers would tell us "if you don't get into computers, you'll end up as a plumber or garbage man!"

Meanwhile I'm adult, watching the plumbers and garbage man bringing home the money and having unions and benefits. And I hated computers so I just got into nothing

Isn't this because the spectrum was expanded? Bunch of people I can think of growing up that were probably autistic but at just called them "eccentric" or "a bit odd" but were overall functional and could live a normal life. Those people today would be considered autistic whereas before they weren't. Like a level 1 could go unnoticed by just about everyone.

Anyways I also find a lot of young adults are proud (?) to be autistic and act like it's a superpower. As the father to an autistic child, it really isn't. But I'm glad you guys have self esteem

Just don't buy one every year? We get new car models every year based on improvements in technology why not phones? You don't have to buy one every year, nobody is forcing you

I liked that in ancient Roman Republic, the rich at least competed with each other by seeing who could provide the best stuff to the poor, like baths, arenas, temples, aqueducts, roadways, etc.

And if you weren't helping, you'd be shamed and later on they could just kill you and take your money.

Sure but sometimes the times makes certain types of escapism unattractive and not fun. The idea of a good guy billionaire is not fun in 2024

Thing is people of opposing politics can work together. Trump isn't politics, it's fascism. If we really wanted to see political opposites working together, Republicans could put country first and get rid of Trump with us, once that threat is gone we can go back to being adults with differences
