BTW every time I see you commenting on something it makes me think I joined the right instance. Well, I joined after checking that out but you are just making it so easy to be happy about it.
Pissing off entire nation state or at least people in power in that nation is unfortunately easy these days. And while the average person usually doesn't run into these issues the shrinking spaces and criminalization of civil society even in countries you wouldn't think are that far gone are at the level that surprising people might run into these issues. There are also some situations where you don't need to piss off entire governments to get a lot of data from a person. Tech-savvy abusive spouse might be enough.
We are not really disagreeing here. I just think that we need to be open about the vulnerabilities and strengths of software. The security of Signal and Matrix are absolutely great especially compared to things like WhatsApp. But they are not 100% secure. Very little is.
Of course use Signal or Matrix but please don't think that makes your messaging entirely impenetrable. I am not saying their end-to-end encryption has been breached. But a compromised device is a compromised device. Signal might be secure at least for now, but is your keyboard?
We do live in times of zero-click spyware and while the general public doesn't necessarily have to worry about things like Pegasus atm, it is still used increasingly and not just against people who break the law.
I do my best, although I do fail to be up to date every once in a while, to stay as secure as possible, but to think any communication is entirely secure is not a good policy.
Or you might be 1% of 1%. I think it is great. At least until I arbitarily decide it is not. ;)
One important thing to remember is that they were not actually kicked out of any of those platforms, the most extreme communities and people on some platforms were banned but generally the people are still there. And they come out of the woodwork if in any way you or the communities you run are visible in things that they hate.
But the lesson in this is that if those communities are easily findable for less extremist people who might be vulnerable to radicalization the communities will spread. While banning them to more hidden places causes a risk of further and further radicalization inside the group IMO the risk is less than the statistically significant rise of fascism, alt-right and extremist hate that at least Western countries are facing globally. The best way to combat radicalization is also not to let these radicalized communities exist alongside others as they were the same as it gives legitimacy to their viewpoints. And to be honest the best way to combat radicalization is to combat marginalization and suffering by educational measures, accessible mental health support, and robust social security nets that are high enough to actually live and not just survive. But that is not here or there when it comes to talking about internet platforms and their handling of extremist ideology or hate.
I do not personally have as much knowledge of the radicalized left as the radicalized right, different religions, and ethnicities. Partly because as a leftist who is an aid worker focusing on refugees, they don't tend to come at me in the same way as the constant right-wing extremist viewpoints that come out of windows and doors. But in my opinion same goes for them although I see less of a danger of them becoming statistically significant in the near future. But lets not give them that chance.
Because of my frequent runnings with radicalized rights and the unfortunate need to be also up to date in how radicalization works as refugees can be vulnerable to radicalization, not because of where they are from or what they believe in but because of how they are treated and the conditions they survive in, I really hope we can at least here in Fediverse create a place where the hate while not banned as it is an impossibility is walled well enough that I can feel safe writing this comment. Of course, in this instance I have no real vote as it is not my instance, just giving my few cents.
I don't think that is an old person trait. You are just secretly Nordic.
Mine is very similar. Loudness annoys me but the rest of the inconsiderate behavior that seems to be more common to teenagers drives me bonkers. My teenage neighbors moved last week. First, they did not first empty the elevator of the 50 apartment building but tried to take stuff directly to the car after cigarette break. While three people were waiting to use elevator. Then they left some furniture in entrance hall that would be whatever but by doing it they blocked two doors to building common storages that are commonly used until late next day. Another thing is littering when the trash baskets are right there. And yes, I said something and felt like old man screaming for them to get out of my lawn. I guess I have reachem my rackety old man stage while being thirty something woman.
And we in Finland call them metsämansikka which just means forest strawberries.
