  • It was always originally "inflammable", as in "able to be inflamed". It wasn't until cargo warning placards came around (for trains, I'm sure), that the meaning got muddled up with "unable to be brought to flame".

There was an official agreement to create the word "flammable", and use that on warning placards instead.

  • Oh, of course. He's very familiar with his area and the best materials to use, and has lots of practice. But he's also pretty famous for showing his work without cuts, and I am always amazed with his hand drill skills. He's got an ember in like twenty seconds.

  • "[The administration] can’t, on their own, denaturalize people, they still have to go to a federal district court,” said Chisthi. “Denaturalization finally does belong to federal district courts – but they are obviously keen on finding every way they can to denaturalize people they think did not deserve to be naturalized.”

But what the administration can do is drag anyone and everyone they want into the courts, where they'll either have to pay for their own attorney or go it alone, jump through hoops, miss work, incur travel expenses, and of course all the fucking stress that goes along with "this is the beginning of my being disappeared to a foreign gulag."

They don't care whether any specific individual is denaturalized. Some percentage will be, for good or bad "reasons." Some will just give up and leave the country. Some will go on the run. Many will succeed in court, retaining their citizenship, as well as a whole lot of paranoia for the rest of their lives.

All of them will suffer from the process. The suffering is the point.

  • Oh wow, I missed the video also linked in that article. Oops!

    Why?

Because I am sure that lots of people read "human trafficking" and think that it primarily affects women, or is a "women's issue", and by extension, assume that human trafficking has little impact on men. That opens up a whole "men vs women" can of worms, frames women as victims and men as perpetrators.

  • I believe - and @shalafi@lemmy.world will correct me if I'm wrong - that as long as the static charge differential between you and the equipment is low enough, there's no concern about damaging static electricity flow through components. Touching the case, even if it's not earth grounded, will discharge any potential you're holding into the case. Then the difference between you and the components will be small enough to be safe.
