  • I agree with others that a single sitting improves the book. I'm not sure why it has such acclaim, but it was at the very least memorable to me. I read it a year or so ago now and I can still recall the plot

  • That's a good point and it poses an interesting dilemma.

If a community chooses to not defederate, then their users will find their comments utterly unavoidable. Either userd will have to accept that or, best case scenario, have gaps in comment threads everywhere where their comments are being filtered out

  • Definitely would second Plex. Previously I just had an external hard drive with my library on it but that isn't as accessible.

With Plex, you can easily get started just installing it on a personal computer and let it grow over time. I had mine on my personal computer for years before recently upgrading to a NAS and it's top tier. Makes streaming to any device effortless and helps you organize your library

  • In the United States here and I haven't had non-streaming television since I moved out of my parent's house.

Toyed with things like Sling and YouTube TV once, but they just aren't worth it.

  • There's a scene from the OT that kills me. When they're on Endor in the evening and Leia and Han are being "romantic" and it is some of the most soap opera dialogue in the whole series.

Its arguably not terrible when you read it, but watching it I was rolling my eyes. People love to hate on the Padme+Anakin romance but the Han+Luke+Leia love triangle is equally as hard to watch, in my opinion. If we're going to give one a hard time we can't ignore the other. Lucas just isn't the best at dialogue

Leia holds back her tears as Luke slowly lets her go and moves away. He disappears onto the walkway that leads out of the village. Leia, bathed in moonlight, watches him go as Han comes out of the Chief's hut and comes over to her. Leia is crying, her body trembling. He realizes only now that she is crying.

    HAN Hey, what's goin' on?

Leia attempts to stifle her sobs and wipes her eyes.

LEIA Nothing. I - just want to be alone for a little while.

HAN (angry) Nothing? Come on, tell me. What's goin' on?

She looks up at him, struggling to control herself.

    LEIA I...I can't tell you.

HAN (loses his temper) Did you tell Luke? Is that who you could tell?

    LEIA I...

    HAN Ahhh...

He starts to walk away, exasperated, then stops and walks back to her.

    HAN I'm sorry.

    LEIA Hold me.

Han gathers her tightly in his protective embrace.

  • No mention on a cause in this article, curious what it was

  • Is that why I haven't heard of them before? I switch between Beehaw and Programming.dev and I just noticed them everywhere on the latter

Politics aside, I find their comments to be callous, elitist, and rude. And I heard "a few bad apples" arguments but honestly it doesn't seem to be a few. All of their posts in my feed are aggressive. And have huge "look what this idiot dolt said before I owned him" energy

If admins aren't willing to defederate then I'm happy Sync has an instance-wide block

  • Pragmatic Programmer is OK, there's not any code that I can remember and it's just general purpose, helpful ideas for programmers to follow

  • Awesome list. I was already using most of these but the DNS is new to me, so I'll give it a spin. I was already using AdAway on my phone but that was already handling the DNS traffic, so I had to disable it. I like the Mullvad DNS better because AdAway was working as a psuedo-VPN which wasn't ideal

  • Right? This is just a wacky line of thought. 99% of cases are "prejudged" that's why we have a trial process with arguments and counter-arguments. To show evidence and convince the judges of your opinions.

Sad that impeachment is continuing to be wielded as a weapon more and more. It should be reserved for extreme situations. Not just because you want an excuse to get rid of your opponent

  • You made it political, not me? I'm responding to you not using Brave at least in part due to the founder's political beliefs

  • Thank you for pointing that fact out! It sounds like it was decided by Mozilla about a year ago to institute that change and I hadn't noticed the lack of ads until today. At one point it did have issues, but I was able to get around that by changing some settings. But from the sounds of it that may no longer be possible

    Source

That's a shame! I still contribute at work at least, since I use Edge there

  • I mentioned this in the article the other person posted, but I wanted to let the OP be the one to gather the source because then we're on the same page. If I had gone out and found an article from the opposite end of the spectrum we'd be coming to the conversation from diametrically opposed viewpoints

I realize it sounds lazy, and perhaps there's some truth to that. But any time I make a claim on Lemmy I do my best to provide a source as well

  • I read about that in the article the other commenter posted! The article also mentioned that, once he was removed as CEO, some right-wing websites, namely something called "RedState", just outright blocked FireFox users in a counter-protest.

"We wanted to remind people that the totalitarian impulse of the Mozilla corporation is real," said right-wing site RedState on April 8 after blocking access by Firefox users.

  • Thank you for the link! I realize it's very much a LMGTFY situation, but I prefer to have the person making the claim provide the source because it puts us on equal ground of having the same source of information. From the article it's clear that I could have looked up any right-wing article and found information to the contrary and we'd be in different contexts.

Now, that being said, for anyone else coming to the thread, I recommend you read the whole article. But the TL;DR is that Eich was made CEO of Mozilla in 2014, which caused increased optics on his $1,000 contribution to Proposition 8, a California initiative to ban gay marriage in the state. Because of this, and because of his failure to diffuse the situation, he was removed as CEO shortly after. He was offered a high-ranking position at the company but declined.

So, I would say he definitely has (had?) some close-minded views on gay marriage, however, he never publicly stated anything, but instead made a public donation that was "found out" by investigation, not because he outwardly publicized it. In fact, the article (and apparently Eich and his employees) makes it clear that he never let the viewpoint affect him professionally. But, it did make many of his co-workers uncomfortable and feel unwelcome in the Mozilla community, especially having someone hold those opinions so high up in the corporate chain.

I just wanted to make sure the context was all straight here. I don't agree with his close-minded views, I'm glad he was removed as CEO, and it's another reason that I don't want to use the Brave browser (assuming his views haven't changed). But, I just want to make sure I had the whole picture

  • Also FF has great loading times. Never noticed a problem with speed or Ram in the last decade

  • Do you have a source for the founder claims? I'm no fan of Brave but that's an intense back story if true
